WILMINGTON – George Thomas “Tommy” Jones, age 61, passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2022. Born in Nash County, NC on March 30, 1961, he was the son of the late George Howell Jones and Jo Ann Coley Jones.
A very talented and gifted guitar player, Tommy played in several bands throughout his life. Always one to live life to its fullest, his “grab life by the horns” personality was always on display for the world to see whether it was enjoying the open road riding motorcycles or finding out just how fast a fast car can go. Tommy also enjoyed decorating especially for Christmas and traveling, regardless of if it was with family and friends or as a conductor with CSX Railroad whom he had worked for over 18 years. A dedicated father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, and dear friend to many, he will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
Tommy is survived by his son, Justin Thomas Jones; his grandson, Ryan Thomas Jones; his sister, Amy Jones Miller; his niece, Brittany Nicole Miller; his nephew, William Albert Miller; his extended family; and many wonderful friends.
A Funeral Service to celebrate Tommy’s life will be held on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services. I am at a total loss of words, he was/is a truly gifted musician, and talented at anything he put his hands on, got a dirt bike in a million pieces, put it together and raced it with me, in Sumpter SC. He had an impact on my life, I purchased a Gibson Les Paul guitar, because he had one, and tried to play it as smooth as he could, still trying. I really enjoyed living with him in the trailer at the steel bridge, guitar amps, loud rock-n-roll, and laughing all the time, I wish you peace forever my friend, Ellie Lee Fisher Jr.
So sorry to learn of Tommy’s passing. I remember his yellow corvette pulling up to the bus stop in Red Oak during his high school years at EA, his sense of humor and wonderful smile. Tommy was such a great person! My sincere condolences to his family during this time of loss. Prayers for you, Amy, and much love.
Q: What will you never forget about George?
A: Amy, I am in shock and filled with much sadness as I read about Tommy’s passing. The years I knew him while I worked in Rocky Mount were filled with lots of laughter. My son Jason and his son played at the Carousel club while Tommy and I talked about different things going on in our lives.
May God bless all his family and friends during this time.
Sincerely, Larry Crocker
