George “Pete” Washington Taylor

October 25, 1940 ~ July 12, 2012

George “Pete” Washington Taylor, Jr., age 71, passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Edgecombe County on October 25, 1940, he was the son of the late George W. Taylor, Sr. and Dora Dew Taylor. He was also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Mandy Bryant. Pete loved life and lived it to the fullest. His passion was family, hunting, and fishing. He loved the outdoors, nature, and was very good at tracking things in the woods. Pete was a longtime member of Gatlin Hunting Club. He could be called a modern day “Daniel Boone” except for the fact that he liked the comforts of home at night. He loved family gatherings and he was the king of BBQ chicken. His last few years was spent with his constant companion, his bulldog, Bullet. He spent many hours at the beaver dam on the family farm. He even built a camp there that was fondly known as T & T (Turner and Taylor). He loved fast cars, 4-wheelers and 4-wheel drive trucks. Kids were drawn to him like a magnet because he was a big kid himself. He was a happy man with a smile for almost everyone. Pete will be missed by all who loved him. A loving husband, father and grandfather, he leaves behind his devoted wife of 53 years, Betty Lois Johnson Taylor; daughter, Kimberly Taylor Watson and husband David of Elm City; son, George Russell “Rusty” Taylor and wife Lisa of Rocky Mount; three grandchildren, Andrew Bryant, Brittany, and Courtney Taylor; sisters, Lois Turner and husband Freddie and Jean Lewis, both of Rocky Mount; and brother, Marvin Taylor and wife Penny of Rocky Mount. The family will receive friends and relatives 1:30pm to 3:00pm Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home. A service to remember Pete will be held at 3:00pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Terry Brooks officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Community Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 8109, Rocky Mount NC 27804. Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home, 1130 N. Winstead Avenue, Rocky Mount NC 27804. You may share memories and condolences with the family by visiting www.wheelerwoodlief.com.
