George W. "Buck" Davis, Jr., age 88, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 26, 2013. He was born in Wilson, NC, on October 20, 1924 to the late Reverend George W. Davis and Sarah Ida Bryant Davis. He was preceded in death by fifteen older siblings and many dear nieces and nephews.
Buck was a member of the 5th Marine Division during World War II and he was a member of The Greatest Generation. He played baseball for the Marines and football for UNC. Buck worked for Export Leaf Tobacco Company in Wilson and later moved to Rocky Mount as a buyer for Universal Leaf Tobacco Company until his retirement. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and spending time with his family. Buck was a member of Sunset Avenue Baptist Church.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 59 years Betty Sue Harris Davis; daughter, Susan Davis Beddingfield; son, George "Bo" Sullivan-Davis and his wife Jane; daughter, Sally Davis Whitley; daughter, Whitney Davis and her husband Sam Marsh; five grandchildren, Kristen Learned and her husband, Rob; Ward Beddingfield; Sadie Sullivan-Davis; Cristina Sullivan-Davis; and David Whitley; one great-granddaughter, Rose Learned. Bill Beddingfield and Duane Whitley were like sons to him for many years.
The family wishes to express gratitude for the many years of loving care and support of Dr. Amarendra Reddy, Dr. David Browder, and most recently Hospice of Nash General Hospital and many special caregivers, friends, and neighbors.
Visitation will be Friday, March 1, 2013 from 12:30pm-1:45pm at Sunset Avenue Baptist Church. A memorial service will follow at 2:00pm at the church with Rev. Steve Roberson and Rev. Neil Woodcock officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Nash General or Sunset Avenue Baptist Church.
