Fred Waverly Smith, 77, passed away on September 16, 2010 at home surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer. He was born November 25, 1932 in Halifax County to the late Nellie Chichester Smith and Sam William Smith. Fred made his home in Enfield until his marriage in 1988 to Janelle Smith at which time he moved to Rocky Mount.
Fred was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church for over 22 years where he proudly served as an usher and behind the scenes kitchen helper. He was a dedicated member of the Asbury Sunday school class.
A quiet man of few words and easy-going manner, Fred had a genuine love for his family and loved spending time with children, especially his "special granddaughter" Mallory. He was proud to tell stories of growing up with nine siblings and cherished getting together with most of them for a once a month Friday night fish dinner.
Fred loved to travel with his wife and stepdaughters and spent as much time as possible in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Fred proudly served his country in the Air Force during the Korean War. Prior to his retirement he worked for the State of North Carolina as a mechanic.
Fred leaves to cherish his memory his wife Janelle Smith; stepdaughter Lisa Hedgepeth of Hillsborough; stepdaughter and husband Dana and Lee Caudill of Graham; siblings and spouses - Clifton and Ruth Smith of Enfield; Frances Palma of Fairview, NJ; Janice Smith of Nashville; Dorothy Whitehead of Rocky Mount; Louise and Lewis Faulkner of Cary; Marvin Smith of Enfield; Franklin Smith of Greenville; Robert and Debbie Smith of Red Oak; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Also surviving are special in-laws: Delano and Ruth Jenkins of Rocky Mount; Robbie, Shannon and Mallory Beamon of Wilson.
In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded by death by two brothers, Sam William Smith Jr. and James Linwood Smith, two brothers-in-law, Nunzio Palma and Wiley Whitehead, and one nephew, Christopher Smith.
The family will receive friends Friday, September 17 from 6:00-8:00 pm at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1217 Bethlehem Rd., Rocky Mount, NC 27803.
