Elvira “Sippy” Garrett

Elvira Manning Jennings Garrett, 87 of Rocky Mount, N.C. died on September 19, 2011 at Nash General Hospital. Elvira, "Sippy" to her family and friends, was born April 21, 1924 in Elizabeth City N. C. to Linwood E Jennings, Sr. and Elvira Christine Taylor Jennings. She graduated from Elizabeth City High School and obtained her nursing degree from Kings Daughters School of Nursing in Portsmouth, VA.. Sippy began her nursing career on staff at the Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, N. C., working with her mother Christine, brother Earl and sister-in-law Mary Jennings. Additionally, she served on staff of Nash General Hospital and Community Hospital for many years and ended her nursing career as a Hospice nurse in Rocky Mount. Sippy was an avid reader, determined knitter, budding photographer. She especially loved traveling and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She was passionate about her family and they about her; nothing pleased her more than quality time with loved ones. Her grandson Garrett held a very special place in her heart. Sippy was a generous woman who would do anything for her family and friends, yet ask for nothing for herself. She will be remembered as the most loving, giving professional nurse and personal friend anyone could ever wish for; she will be profoundly missed by all that knew her. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Martin Garrett and daughter Nancy Garrett Cummins. She is survived by her son Craig Garrett of the home, her grandson Garrett Cummins of Kennewick, WA., her brother, Earl Jennings Jr. of Salisbury, N.C., sister Ann "Piggy" Sawyer of Virginia Beach, VA., sister-in-law Barbara Garrett of Greensboro, N C, brother-in-law, Lawrence David Garrett and wife Vivian of Bowling Green, VA., and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, September 23, 2011 at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
