Dr. Vivienne Baker Anderson

August 27, 1942 ~ February 1, 2026

Resided in: Spring Hope, NC

Spring Hope – With heavy hearts, we say goodbye to Vivienne Anderson – earthly, brilliant and endearing. She filled every room with warmth and laughter.

Dr. Vivienne Baker Anderson, age 83, passed away on Sunday, February 1, 2026.  Born in England on August 27, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Walter John Baker and Minnie Woolgar Baker.

She was predeceased by her son, Miles Fredrick Anderson.

Dr. Anderson is survived by her son, Paul (Kandice) Melliush-Anderson, daughters, Harriet “Maymo” Amelia Anderson, and Marta Lilianna Anderson; grandchildren, Brianna Gordon Mintah, Hannah Owens, Mark Melliush-Anderson and Harry Melliush-Anderson, and great grandson, Giovanni Miles Anderson, along with many extended family members, dear friends and colleagues.

Dr. Anderson was a kind woman who always made sure everyone around her felt her love.  A woman of great strength, character, and integrity, she endured many hard and trying struggles, often on her own, all while raising her children as a single parent with dedication and love. She faced adversity with grace.

She emigrated to the US in 1974 and returned to school in 1981, earning her BA in English at St. John Fisher University, her MA at SUNY Brockport, and her Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Composition and English at Texas Christan University.

Dr. Anderson was Professor of English/Director of Writing Program at North Carolina Wesleyan College beginning in 1988. During her tenure she earned many honors including the Jefferson-Pilot Lectureship Award, the Leslie H. Garner Award and the Exemplary Teacher Award. She was honored at the annual Founder’s Day ceremony in 2013 for her 25 years of service to the College and at that time was awarded the rank of Faculty Emeriti.

Dr. Anderson was deeply hardworking and committed to her profession, as well as to the arts and literature. She possessed a wonderful sense of humor, a quick wit, a warm personality, and a radiant smile. She was active in the peace and women’s rights movements.

An avid gardener, she had a remarkable “green thumb” and created a colorful garden oasis in her backyard.  She has a beautiful soul, who loved the simple things in life. Vivienne found joy in her books, her crossword puzzles, her little doodles and most of all, her morning coffee.

She was always willing to help and gave so much of herself to the people she loved. She was incredibly intellectual and had a gift of understanding anything they needed. A loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and cherished friend to many, Dr. Vivienne Anderson will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Her kindness and gentle presence will live on in all of us who were blessed to know her.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Dr. Anderson was one of my English instructors at NC Wesleyan University (College). She was one of the best instructors I have ever had. I simply adored her. I am very sorry to read of her passing. My prayers are with her family during this very difficult time. She adored her daughter with all of her being. She talked about her all of the time. RIP Dr. Anderson, I will never forget you and the confidence you instilled in me about my writing.

    Love you always,
    Cheryl Ann Landin

  2. Vivienne was such a delightful soul. I loved every phone call we shared during the years of me being her insurance agent. She taught one of my elementary aged children one year all about how children in England celebrated Christmas. My daughter thought she was wonderful and so very interesting. She really wanted to take her to “show and tell!” Vivienne got a big chuckle from that. She had such a good heart. She loved her children and grand children so very much. May she rest in peace. 🩷

  3. To all of Dr. Anderson’s family, I am very sorry for your loss. I apologize for leaving out other loved ones, but it was an honest oversight and definitely not intentional. My Wesleyan days were a long time ago. Dr. Anderson was a true gem and I will miss seeing her around. My prayers for peace, comfort, and strength when you need them the most.

  4. I’ll never forget the day I asked your son, Miles, how to address you. He said, ” Dr. Anderson!” Even after many decades, I still find it hard to call you Vivienne. It has been an privilege to know you, love you and call you family! Thank you for welcoming me into your family with open arms from the moment we met! I will forever cherish every memory and moment we spent together. From tea on your porch, the Spring Hope Pumpkin Festival, long walks, and deep conversations. I am so grateful you got to watch my children grow up and will always be a huge influence in their lives! Especially my youngest who is named after your son! She has a passion for English and you just might have inspired her to be a teacher! It breaks my heart that we are back in NY and going to miss you Celebration of Life. But please know that we celebrate you always! Our hearts are broken because you aren’t on earth anymore. But, I know you are reunited with your son again in Heaven. One day you’ll be there waiting for us to join you. Forever loved and cherished, Gina, Stephanie, Nikki, Charlie, Miles and Mema Grudier
