ROCKY MOUNT - Dr. Camilla Allyn Proctor, age 79, peacefully passed away on Friday, October 1, 2021. Born in Nash County, NC on September 16, 1942, she was the only daughter of the late James Elwood Proctor and Elizabeth Boone Proctor.
Dr. Proctor graduated from West Edgecombe High School where she excelled academically and went on to attend the University of North Carolina with her sights set on becoming a physician. She accomplished this goal graduating as a Doctor of Medicine in 1968. Dr. Proctor then went on to complete fellowships in Ohio and Mississippi, before deciding to return home to Eastern NC. She moved to Nash County, then in 1990 she returned to her home in Edgecombe County, where she lived until being called home.
Dr. Proctor made Rocky Mount and Nash General Hospital her home, as a physician and as a friend to her colleagues and patients. She opened her own practice in 1976 where she treated her patients for 44 years, finally closing the doors in 2020. Dr. Proctor is known for many things, sleeping in the nursing circle with her head in a chart, rummaging through the staff refrigerator or sleeping in one of her patient's hospital rooms but most importantly her compassion and concern for her patients was her priority. She would sit and listen to her patients for hours if that was what they needed and they loved her greatly. She treated patients with the goal of seeing them walk out, as well as held their hands when they took their last breaths. Respected greatly by her colleagues and peers, some would say she was an institution in the health care community. She will be missed and remembered by the many that knew her and knew that she cared for people and her patients above all else.
She is survived by her only son, Thomas "Tom" Edward Schill and his wife, Jenny Boone Schill of Temperance Hall; her only grandchild, Reed Thomas Schill, whom she loved with all she had. She will also be dearly missed by her family friend Melinda Williams and her husband James and her faithful dog, Sugar.

Please accept our deepest condolences for your family’s loss.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Dr. Proctor was not only my doctor, since starting her practice until the end of her practice, but my dear friend. She was caring, kind, generous, intelligent and was always there when I needed her. I worked with her at the hospital and she gave so much of herself to all her patients. As a nurse she taught me so much. My life was made so much better having her in it. RIP my friend.
Dr. Proctor was very kind and I remember her fondly. I’m very sorry for her family’s loss.
I had the great honor and pleasure of working for Dr. Proctor in the late 1980’s. She had a heart of Gold. Her patients were all kind and appreciated all of care and concern..they loved her as much as she loved them. If she was called away to the hospital on an emergency they were patient and understanding..they all said the same thing..one day it could one of us who has an emergency..
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
A great Dr & FRIEND SHE WILL SURELLY BE MISSED.

I loved this lady so much. Worked with her along time at the hospital and she was also my doc for awhile. The one thing I can say about her other than hide your food when she was around, was she had the most compassion for her patients than I have ever seen. She will be missed.

Camilla, you will always be in my heart. We have had a lots of laughs, shed lots of tears. May you rest easy now. You are whole.
Dr. Proctor will never be forgotten. My son was 3 years old and throwing up blood. His hemoglobin was 5.0 and the er was going to send him home. I saw her at the nurse’s station and asked if she would take a look at him. I knew her from one of the nursing homes. She took one look at him, unresponsive and told the er nurse to call the on call ENT doctor immediately. He came out and they did emergency surgery and gave him 2 units of blood and a bag of platelets. He was bleeding out from throat surgery he had had 2 weeks prior. He would have died if he had went home. I have my son because of her. A debt that I will never be able to repay.
My love and prayers for you Jenny and Melinda!

Dr. Proctor was such an amazing doctor, person and friend. She always answered when we called her for any of her patients. She was the first to try and keep all the staff healthy also. When she would sleep in the nursing circle we would let her sleep as long as possible and then we would almost have to draw straws as to who got to wake her. I learned so much from in my many years working with her. The community has lost a precious gift. May she now rest in peace.
Dr. Proctor was a member of the Nash County Medical Society when I first started as secretary. She was so kind to me and helped me through the years with anything I needed. Dr. Proctor cared so much for her patients and family. I will miss her shining face and her input at our meetings. Praying for her family during this time. Carol Lancaster
One of the finest physicians there was . She took time with every patient and listened to them . She actually showed love and concern and would go the extra way . I often would find her at the foot of one of my parents beds when they were admitted to the hospital at night . God gained a angel of love ! Peace and love to her family
One of the finest and kindest physicians there have ever been . If you were I. The hospital you would see her at night and often asleep at the foot of your bed . Gods kingdom gained a angel with her . Peace and happiness be with you our beloved Dr Proctor
Such a wonderful person & doctor. She loved all her patients and helped them in many ways unrelated to their health needs. Giving unselfishly of her time and money. Helping families with Christmas to putting food on their tables, she was remarkable. She was not very convential, but we would not have had it any other way. She will be sorely missed, condolences to her family & patients. Zettie Moss
Awesome dedicated doctor with a selfless soul
A Caring Doctor, and a Wonderful Friend. She gave All of Her Medical knowledge to each one of her patients, often staying overnight at the Hospital for Her many Patients. Camilla was a Caring and Devoted Person whose Smile assured that All would be ok. She will be greatly missed.
Loved and will be missed by many. You have gained your wings Dr. P. Rest easy and fly high!
Written by Claire Duncan As we all share our funny stories and antidotes about Dr. Proctor, we need to remember that she was a trailblazer for women. She was one of a few women, at that time, to graduate from UNC with MD behind her name, succeeding in a mans world. She went on to marry, keeping her maiden name, raising a son and starting a practice with a bevy of patients, that grew many times to be several generations of family members. She was outspoken, raw and unfiltered. She didn’t concern herself with social status, keeping up with the Jones’s, but kept close to her the important things in life, generosity, friendship and doing whatever she could for those around her. She truly became a role model for girlswomen, showing us what could be accomplished and managed to accomplish things her way. She danced to the beat of her own drummer unapologetically, she faced obstacles with courage, never knowing a stranger and saw beauty in people when others could not. She gave more of herself than she ever expected in return, a rare quality to possess. Even during her difficult times she always made time to talk and comfort all that cross her path. Dr. Camilla Proctor will always be a hero to me. She will hold a special place in my heart always, and my family and myself will cherish the memories we have of her. The world is a more beautiful place for having her in it, we are all lucky to have shared the earth the same time she was here. She left this place a much better place than she found it. Camilla, you will forever missed. Quinn will always remember you fondly. May the four winds blow you safely home my friend ❤️

Dr Proctor was a very caring Dr. I worked at NGH for many years. On the day of her wedding she had a very sick patient and didn’t want to leave her. We literally had to push her out of the room to go get dressed for her wedding. She would do anything for anyone. She will be missed! My condolences to her family and personal friends.

Dr Proctor was a special Doctor to many people. She was a Doctor to both of my Grandfathers, my Mom and myself at one point. Her Father and my Great Grandmother were related, so we always called each other cousins. She was a Doctor like no other and truly cared for each and every patient as if they were family.

What a beautiful, kind lady. I worked alongside her at Nash General from 1999 until 2006. This obituary describes her perfectly. Those brief catnaps at the nurses station is what I remember best. They threw away the mold when she stepped into this world. May she finally rest, as she is surely deserving. Love the picture!!
She was a very special doctor and friend to my family, especially my mama. Loved working with her, never knew where you would find her sleeping. One of my favorites was with her patients. She will be missed by many, rest in peace. Dr. Proctor 😘

You will be truly missed.
Dr. Proctor took care of my Dad for several years until he died in 1981. I was a patient of hers as well for a short time. She made me feel at ease with my father’s death. I will always cherish her for that. She was a wonderful and caring person and Dr. I know she will be missed more than anyone can imagine. I pray she will rest in peace. She has more than earned it. My prayers for the family are God give them comfort and strength when they need them most and peace that Dr. Proctor is in the Arms of Jesus. We will see her again one day. Cheryl Ann Chadwick Landin
Dr. Proctor was a loving, caring and most kind woman. She truly loved her patients and treated them and their families as if they were her very own. She was my Grandmother’s doctor for many years. I can remember when my Grandmother was so sick that each of her children and some of her grand children would rotate spending the night with her. Dr. Proctor would sometimes bring us homemade soup or something else she had made for supper so we would have a hardy meal as she would say. She was and always will be loved, missed and remembered with love. To her family, please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers. The Ada T. Pridgen family.
Dr. Camilla was my doctor for about 20 years. She was a wonderful doctor and I loved her. She will be missed. Love Calvenia Jenkins

You deserve all that heaven has to offer. Rest easy sweetheart.
My mother Sylvia Gregory worked for Dr Proctor during the 70s and was always a great friend to her. When my mother was in and out of the hospital due to illness, Dr Proctor would always come to see her. She came by after my mother passed away in 2017. She was a kind hearted, funny and dear lady. She will be missed. She took care of her patients and loved them. Rest in peace Dr Proctor. Prayers for your family. Cheri and Lisa Dudley

Camilla was my cousin as well as for several years my doctor. When I had to call a rescue squad and get flown to Greenville for emergency heart surgery she was dropped everything and was in Greenville before I came out of surgery. I met one of her patients who told me Camilla asked why she was waiting for the bus and when she said she could not afford to get her car out of the shop Camilla asked how much she needed and gave her the cash. I had known of her driving patients home at the end of the day if they did not have their own transportation. She was truly one of a kind. She was probably the last doctor in town to make house calls as well. I certainly will miss her.
The last of the caring doctors. She is being missed. My condolences to Tom and his family and also to Melinda and the girls in the office with her everyday. Heaven gained an angel with gumph.
Dr. Camilla Proctor was a very thorough doctor. Who I got to know as her patient and later on professionally. She gave me excellent care during my time as her patient. She treated me with the upmost care and respect and later on I was a Medical Records Clerk at the former Nash Grove Manor in Nashville,NC. She always made sure that her patients’ Medical Records had at least one year of labs, nurses’ notes, and MARs, along with physicians’ diagnosises and orders. She would go thru each one of her patients’ records. I thank God for the privilege of having her as my Doctor.
Dr. proctor was a wonderful person. She truly cared about her patients. I loved you as if you was my grandmother. Thank you for all the talks and taken care of me. You will be truly missed

I remember Doctor Proctor from the time I was 10 years old. She was my Papas Doctor for many years and was with him the evening he took his last breath. It was March 2000, st Patrick’s day 6 pm, my Papa was going south. I can still see her vividly saying Leroy you have to wake up I need you to tell me bye please Leroy wake up I have to hear you say bye. This past October 10th would have been his 85th birthday. I’d like to think she was able to reunite and see my Papa again. Rocky Mount will be lost without this beautiful lady. She was definitely part of my inspiration to help others. Forever in our hearts, may you rest peacefully. Crystal
This is an amazingly sweet woman. She was always kind to people.
