Donald Wesson Batchelor

Mr. Donald Wesson Batchelor, age 68, died Sunday, March 13, 2011. Born March 4, 1943, he was a son of the late Wesson Odell and Kathleen Sawyer Batchelor. A graduate of Benvenue High School and the University of North Carolina, a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Upon graduation from UNC he joined the Peace Corp and served two years in West Africa. Upon his return he lived in Washington, D.C. for several years and later in Long Beach, NC. The study of history was his passion. He would regale his family and friends in discussions of the history of North Carolina for hours, spreading his enthusiasm to the listener. His pride was the completion of his book. He enjoyed his retirement in Merida, Yacatan, Mexico where he made many close friends. Don is survived by his sisters, Chloe Batchelor Harper and her husband, Robert, and Kathleen Odelle Sawyer Batchelor, all of Edgecombe County, NC; nieces, Whitney Blankenship and her husband, Matthew, of Atlanta, GA and Erin Harper of Santa Monica, CA; grandnephew and grandniece, Harper and Amelia Blankenship of Atlanta, GA. Memorial services will be held at 7:00 PM on Friday, April 15, 2011 in the Chapel of Wheeler Woodlief Funeral Home. Inurnment will be held at Pineview Cemetery.
