Dolly Gray Hinton Joyner

TARBORO - Dolly Gray Hinton Joyner, age 91, formerly of Rocky Mount, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 30, 2021 at The Fountains at The Albemarle in Tarboro, following several months of declining health. Born in Edgecombe County, NC on April 2, 1930, she was the youngest child of the late Eben Festus Hinton and Adelia Lancaster Hinton. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Floyd, Norman, Jesse "Jake", Paul, Speight, and Billie, who passed away in childhood; and her two sisters, Gertrude and Lizzie. Following graduation from West Edgecombe High School, Dolly took courses at then Atlantic Christian College in Wilson before a long career with Peoples Bank and Trust Co. in Rocky Mount. She was a member of West Edgecombe Baptist Church. Both practical and creative, Dolly enjoyed gardening, sewing and other needlework, and cooking. She was generous in sharing with others and she delighted in the time spent with her family. Dolly is survived by her husband of 67 years, Charles Edwin "Ed" Joyner of Tarboro; her daughter, Donna Joyner Black (John) of Charlotte and Grandfather Mountain; her grandson, John David Black, Jr. (Ali); her granddaughter, Elizabeth Black Smith (Trace); and her great-granddaughter, Annabelle Kate Black, all of Charlotte; and her sister, Florence Hinton Horton, of Rocky Mount. Due to COVID concerns, a Memorial Service will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Dolly's memory to West Edgecombe Baptist Church Scholarship Fund, 13821 NC Hwy. 43, North, Rocky Mount, NC 27801. Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 1130 N. Winstead Avenue, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.   6. Miss Dolly was a special and talented lady! She sewed the prettiest and most special – (silver blue satin prom) gown for me in High School – a dress I will never forget! Always enjoyed seeing her and Mr Ed at WEBC – always made a point to speak and catch up on things! My sincere sympathy to Mr. Joyner and Donna. She will be missed! Great Sunday School Teachers – many find memories.
