Derek Lane Kennedy, 70, passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2010 surrounded by his family at home. He was born October 27, 1939 in Coeburn VA, son of the late John Chase Kennedy and Cleo Lane Kennedy.
Derek retired from Merita Bakery as a Plant Engineer. He served his country in the United States Army. He was a member of West Edgecombe Ruritan Club and a charter member of Edgecombe Hilton and Goggleeye Resort.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Mary Elaine Kennedy; daughter, Renee Hartmann and husband Greg; and grandchildren, Lindsey Kay and Tyler Elaine Hartmann. He is also survived by sisters, Carol Tyree, Carma Williams and husband Peter, and Lesa Moore and husband Alex; and brother, Jeffrey Kennedy and wife Betty.
The family will receive friends from 1:00pm to 2:30pm Friday, June 11, 2010 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home. A committal service will follow at 3:00pm at Rocky Mount Memorial Park with Rev. Terry Brooks officiating.
