Birdie Mosley Smithson

Birdie Mosley Smithson, 89, went Home to Heaven on Saturday, October 22, 2011. Born in Nash County on May 8, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Peter A. Mosley and Estelle Joyner Mosley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Billy Smithson; sisters, Mattie M. Denton, Thelma M. Edwards, Maggie M. Barnes, Lynda Bell M. Bone, Kassie Mae M. Lancaster, Gusta Kathleen M. Lewis, Bertha M. Coley, Margie M. Bone, Ruth M. Moore; brothers, Leon V. Mosley and J. Fred Mosley. Birdie is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Birdie worked for Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company and Sprint for 42 years. During her career she was the Chief Operator in Rocky Mount, Ahoskie, Washington, Whiteville, Tarboro and Wilson. Birdie was active in her church and was a talented musician. She was a joyful aunt to three generations of nieces and nephews, and loved gardening, traveling and helping others. Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to First Free Will Baptist Church, 1825 Bethlehem Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27803. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home with the Rev. Jacky Raper officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives prior to the service from 1:00-2:00pm at the funeral home and other times at the home of Bennett Lewis, 6101 Bulluck School Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27801. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery in Rocky Mount. The family wishes to thank the staff at Autumn Care of Nashville for the great care that was shown to Birdie over the past five years.
