Annie Jean Williams

March 6, 1940 ~ December 2, 2013

Annie Jean Williams, age 73, passed away peacefully Monday, December 2, 2013. Born in Nash County on March 6, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Ellis Guy Williams Sr. and Polly Davis Williams. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Ellis Guy “Big Boy” Williams Jr. A loving sister and aunt, she leaves behind her sister, Mary Stewart; brother, Steve Williams and wife Darlene; sister-in-law, Judy Edgell, all of Rocky Mount; nieces and nephews, Stephanie Medlin, Michael Stewart, Shannon Worsley, Chris Williams, Van Williams, Randy Williams, Chad Williams, Jamie Williams, April Shearin and Christina Wilks; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Jean started her nursing career in the mid-sixties in Rocky Mount and continued for 30 years in Florida. She retired from Nash Heathcare Systems after 16 years as a Registered Nurse. A true caregiver, she was dedicated to helping all those she came in contact with and a true friend to all. Nash General is saying goodbye to a dear friend and colleague. Annie Jean Williams fought a tough fight, and will be remembered by her Nash General family. She is truly an icon that has been a tremendous asset to our patients for several years. She is known as Jean, here on Curtis Ellis Drive in addition to many other nicknames, including “Jean Bug”, “Jeanie Beanie”, “Cysto-Queen”, “JW”, and “Old Timer”. She started her career at Nash General in the Main Operating Room in March of 1997 and began taking call for c-sections in labor and delivery in 1998. She worked full-time in the Main OR while picking up additional call time every weekend to help bring newborns into the world safely. From 1998 to 2013 she worked over 37,540 hours for Labor and Delivery in addition to the time she worked in the operating room and the central sterile department. Jean was loved by the physicians, nurses, surgical techs, and everyone at Nash General for her dedication and commitment to the patients. Many nurses worked side by side with Jean and learned all the knowledge that she had to share. She was the most dedicated, compassionate, and honorable person we have ever had the pleasure to work with. The staff was so blessed that Jean chose to share her life with them. It was hard to believe that such a small petite frame could hold such a feisty, hardworking woman with energy beyond belief. She went to work in all types of weather, even spending the night to make sure she was readily available for the possible emergency c-section. She assisted with thousands of c-sections. On November 12, 2013 marked 1508 total births at Nash since 1998. What a blessing she was to Nash and to the patients and the new additions to their families. The nurses in Labor and Delivery love Jean and will keep her close to their hearts forever. She would call the unit when she was on call to find out what was going on and let them know she was going to get “dinner” at one of her favorite restaurants. There was always a personal invitation to come and join her if anyone could. Jean was a fighter throughout the years and bounced back each time. She was always eager to return to work as soon as she was released to do so. She was so excited about her “clean bill” of health reports and often shared them with her friends at Nash. She took call on “hard to cover” shifts each year, including Christmas Day, Thanksgiving, and ither major holidays. Jean knew the meaning of teamwork and role modeled this on a daily basis. Jean will be missed greatly by the nurses in L D! Her memory will live on every time the OR doors open and with every instrument count the phrase “thats a good number” will echo in everyones heart. Jean will be remembered by her operating room family for her sense of ownership she demonstrated in her surgical service. Her passion in the OR was Urological surgery and she was eager to share her knowledge with others. Jean lived her life saying what was on her mind which was a good fit for the OR, as communication is key to taking great care of patients. Jean loved a good laugh and her sense of humor will live in our hearts forever. Some can say that Jean was a feisty woman and it is this energy that gave her strength for the many hurdles she encountered in life. There is a lesson to learn from Jean as she lived life to the fullest until her last moments here on earth. A service to remember Jean will be held at 3:00pm Thursday, December 5, 2013 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Tedder officiating. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home, 1130 N. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. First of all, I send my condolences to all of Jeans family. I worked with her in PACU and saw her often. She always had a smile and look of contentment. I believe her eyes even smiled. She spoke often of the miracle of her beating her lung cancer as long as she did and she always gave credit to God. I will miss her . I can only hope if I am ever challenged as she was, that I can be as brave as Jean .
