ROCKY MOUNT- Allen Henry Brown, 76, passed away at his home Saturday, October 3, 2009. Allen was born October 15, 1932 in Rocky Mount, the only son of the late Marion and Rebecca Clemmons Brown. He is preceded in death by three sisters, Cathaleen Brantley, Myrtie Price and Minnie Rooks.
Allen was an Army veteran of the Korean War, having served as a Military Police Officer stationed in Germany. In 1956 he graduated from the Cincinnati School of Mortuary Science and began his life-long career as a funeral director.
He was Past President of the North Carolina Funeral Directors Association, served on the Nash Community College Board of Trustees, a member of the Economic Development Commission, Past President of the Rocky Mount Chamber of Commerce, former Nash County Commissioner and a former board member of Planters National Bank. Allen was a member of the Rocky Mount Shrine Club, Elks Lodge, a Mason and a member of Lakeside Baptist Church. Allen was a dedicated community leader and worked behind the scenes on numerous endeavors to make Rocky Mount a place to be proud of.
Allen will be remembered for his power of kindness and willingness to help those in need. "Down in their hearts, wise men know this truth; that the only way to help yourself is to help others".
Allen is survived by his wife of 53 years, Winnie Edwards Brown; one daughter, Debbie Brown and her husband Gary Brown; one sister, Edith Cooley of Rocky Mount; several nieces and nephews and many friends and members of his "extended family".
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to Allen's caregivers who quickly became a part of the family, Quatoshia Hill, Jasmaine Leonard, Krystal Bailey, Krysten Young, Mamie Hedgepeth and the helpful and caring staff of Autumn Care in Nashville.
The family will receive friends and relatives, 5:00-7:00pm Monday evening, October 5, 2009 at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.
A celebration of Allen's life will be held at 2:00pm, Tuesday, October 6, 2009 in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home with Dr. Jody Wright and Dr. Gaylord Lehman presiding. Burial will be for the immediate family.
