Nashville - Wilson Hubbard Dykes, Jr., age 88, was gathered into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, November 3, 2015. He was surrounded by his loving family in the home of his granddaughter. Born in Andalusia, AL on November 8, 1926, he was the son of the late Wilson Hubbard Dykes and Annie Murphy Dykes. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Adams and Frances Ward; three brothers, Raymond Dykes, Morgan Dykes and James Dykes.
Wilson served our country in World War II aboard the US Bunker Hill. He was a tail-gunner and flew missions in the South Pacific theatre including missions over Tokyo. He received several commendations for heroic service. It was during this time in his life that he committed his life to Jesus. This would be the pivotal decision of his life.
Wilson Dykes, lovingly known as “Grandpa” by so many was a retired insurance agent, receiving numerous achievement awards throughout his career. Having retired to North Carolina some 25 years ago, Grandpa did retirement the right way. He volunteered with numerous groups including United Community Ministries and Your Choice Pregnancy Care Center, to name a few. He was a “man of the Word” and taught Gods Word everywhere he could including retirement homes and Nash Correctional Institution. He served at Nash for over 20 years teaching the “Sanctuary Bible Class” weekly. In 2013, he was named volunteer of the year, and is greatly loved and appreciated by the men and the administration at Nash. Grandpa worshipped faithfully at Calvary Chapel of Red Oak, where he served as an elder since the founding of the church. The joy of Grandpas life was to see a soul saved through Gods grace and many were added to the kingdom through Grandpa's faithful ministry.
Wilson leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of 70 years, Helen May Dykes. No couple has ever shared a greater love for one another. He is also survived by his two daughters, Valorie Sauls and her husband, Timothy, of Nashville; and Melinda Vencill and her husband, Don, of Apple Valley, CA. He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren, Robert Parker, Shiloh Wecklich, Jessica Jefferys, Candace Whitaker, Timothy Wilson Rex Sauls; his 8 great-grandchildren; his sister, Amorette Reece; and his two brothers, Oscar Dykes and Charles Dykes.

I was sorry to hear about the passing of Wilson. I just do remember him although I amfour years older. I do rememer Oscar very well. The Dykes family was so ijmporitant in our early history. They operated one of our larger dairys and I recall members of the family walked to school and they came right by home. I rememer Francis and Oscar best. Polly joins me in extending sympathy to the Dykes Family. G. Sidney Waits
So very sorry to hear of Grandpa’s passing. Not for him because I know where he is, but for all of you who will miss him sooo much! He was an amazing person! Our condolences.
Peace and love to the immediate family of my great Uncle Bill. Uncle Bill’s love for the Lord permeated all aspects of his life, right down to his mailbox phone message inviting all who called him to follow Christ. There is no doubt in mind that my great Uncle Bill was received into Heaven with open arms and heard the words, Well done, my good and faithful servant. It was his life’s mission to invite us all to join him for a life of eternity in paradise, praising our Lord. Can’t you just see Uncle Bill’s winsome smile now
I am so very sorry for your loss. Wilson must have been quite a guy! He was my dad’s first cousin and I regret that I never met him. Love to all of the Dykes family, may God bless you and keep you all the days of your lives. You will meet again…. Erin Dresser granddaughter of Evelyn Lunette Murphy
Wilson was my Neighbor and a Beacon On The Hill for all of us in our Neighborhood, praying and encouraging all. We have all truly suffered a great loss with his passing. He Prayed for me and lifted me up Constantly throughout my battle with cancer. He was in the street praying for me behind the rescue squad when I had my heart attack. Wilson would make you feel as you were so special and always had a delightful thing to say to you or about you. Wilson not only talked the talk, but set the example for The Lord in everything he did. He was part of a Great Generation and he was one of the best! We must carry on without him while on earth, But I truly will never forget him and I am a better Christian having known Wilson. I am so Glad to Know that as part of my accepting The Lord that I will see Wilson again when I get to Heaven. Helen we Love You and God Bless you and your family, Fred Adams
