Velma “Toni” Othelle Griffin
January 17, 1928 ~ February 11, 2018
ROCKY MOUNT - Velma "Toni" Othelle Griffin, age 90, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 11, 2018. Born in Nash County, NC on January 17, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Clee and Eleanor Powell Edwards. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James William "Giggi" Griffin; and brother, Brodious Edwards.
Toni was a registered nurse for over 30 years working at Rocky Mount Sanitarium Hospital and Community Hospital of Rocky Mount. She enjoyed helping take care of the sick and assisting anyone that had a medical need. Toni was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church and enjoyed attending the Elsie Murray Sunday School Class each week and the ladies mission group monthly. She also looked forward to getting together with her nursing friends at a local restaurant. Toni was an inspiration to her family and extended community family.
Toni leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughter, Jan Griffin Peele and husband, Bert, of Rocky Mount; sisters, Elsie Coppedge of Rocky Mount, Mary Leigh Wood of Spring Hope, Joyce Pace of Tarboro; brother, Clem Edwards of Rocky Mount; and special granddog, Ellie.
A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Pastor Mike Dixon, Rev. Joe Price, and Toni's nephew, Rev. Michael Edwards officiating. Entombment will follow the service at Rocky Mount Memorial Park Chapel on the Hill Mausoleum. Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Toni's caregivers, Laura, Bonnie, Mary, Selita, Edna, Williamina and the staff at Nash Health Care System Hospice & Palliative Care for the love and care they gave her during this transition.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oakdale Baptist Church, 13037 US 64 Alt. West Highway, Rocky Mount, NC 27801.
