ROCKY MOUNT - Tommy Ray Johnson “TJ”, age 66, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2023, surrounded by his family at his bedside. Born in Nash Couty, NC on August 18, 1957, he was the son of the late William Rufus Johnson and Margaret Lee Brown Johnson. He went to join his loving wife, Glenda Langley Johnson. Also, patiently awaiting his arrival was his sister, Katie Ellis and husband, Frank; his brother, Butch Johnson; and his nephew, Ray Ellis.
Tommy made an impact on many people’s lives, whether it was giving a helping hand, adult beverage or as he called it “medication”, or the shirt off his back. No matter if you called him Tommy, TJ, Papa Tommy, or friend. He will truly be missed by all, and his memory will live on in our hearts forever.
Tommy’s memory will be cherished by his daughters, Kimberly Burns and Cathy Overton and husband, Michael; his son, Tommy “Wayne” Johnson and wife, Pamela; his grandchildren, Daniel Overton and wife, Elizabeth, Tommy Luis Cervantes “TC”, Adrianna Cervantes, Joseph Cervantes, Austin Overton and girlfriend, Abby, and Lainey Overton; his great-grandchildren, Annalyee Cervantes, Khloe Flores, and Raylee Overton; his sisters, Betty Pierce and husband, Dan, and Tammy Edmondson; his brother, Terry Johnson; his sister-in-law, Becky Johnson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family from his 40 plus years of racing and tractor pulling.
A Funeral Service to celebrate Tommy’s life will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Pastor Johnny Edmondson officiating. Burial will follow the service at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 PM to 2:45 PM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Tommy’s memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
