Samuel “Sammy” Manin Bass

September 17, 1946 ~ December 18, 2017

DORTCHES - Samuel "Sammy" Manin Bass, age 71, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2017. Born in Edgecombe County, NC on September 17, 1946, he was the son of the late A. Z. Manin Bass and Elsie Leonard Bass. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Harrold Bass. Sammy loved his Lord, his family and serving his country. He was a proud graduate of Red Oak High School, class of 1964. After graduation, Sammy went on to serve his country in the US Army as a military police officer from 1967-1969. During his tour in Vietnam he was awarded the "Soldier's Medal" for heroism. Sammy was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him. Sammy leaves behind to cherish his memory, loving wife of 49 years, Emily Aycock Bass; daughter, Rhonda Bass Wainright and husband, David; and son, Jeff Bass and wife, Jill. He is also survived by four very special grandchildren, Samantha Wainright, Davis Wainright, Carli Bass and Collin Richardson; siblings, Margaret Bass, Steve Bass and wife, Pat, Jackie Bass Varnell and husband, Billy; many nieces and nephews; special family friends and co-workers. A Celebration of Sammy's Life will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Pastor Phillip Barton officiating. Committal Service with full military honors will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and other times at the home of Sammy and Emily. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Dortches Baptist Church, 4776 Dortches Blvd., Rocky Mount, NC 27804 or American Cancer Society, (for Lung Cancer and Agent Orange Research) 930 B Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.   6. Emily and family we are so sad to hear about Sammy. He always had a funny joke to tell and I was always grateful for all he did for mama and daddy. Sending our prayers and good wishes for you and the family at such a difficult time. I hope that Cindy and I can come visit after Christmas. George and I were glad to have you all as such good neighbors while we lived there.

  8. Dear Emily and Family, My heart is broken for the loss of Sammy. He fought such a brave fight with this ugly disease called cancer. His outlook on life was such an inspiration to me on the occasions we met. He is now out of pain and resting at our Lords side. You will be missed my friend but never forgotten.   16. Sammy I will never forget the first time we met while watching a Northern Nash Football game back in 1992. As we both stood side by side in the stands watching your son play for the Knights, I specifically remeber you telling me, son if you don’t lose the Yankee attitude you won’t make it a week in the south…..just Stick with Jeffrey, he will teach you the right way how we do things in the south…..at that very moment, I was instantly motivated to become a southern gentlemen. You have been a part of my life for the past 25 years and I will forever be greatful that we met. Thank you for Service to this great nation and making Jeffrey and I the southern gentlemen we are today. God Bless and God be with the entire Bass family.
