Raymond Harrison Moore

June 27, 1947 ~ September 9, 2017

ROCKY MOUNT - Raymond Harrison Moore, Jr., passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Sanford Health and Rehabilitation in Sanford, NC; a peaceful ending to a life well-lived. Born in Rocky Mount, Raymond lived his entire life in Sharpsburg, NC, the oldest son of Raymond and Helen Moore. After graduation from Benvenue High School, he earned two bachelor degrees from NC State's School of Animal Science. After spending several years with both Montgomery Ward and Sears in their distribution networks, he finished his working years as a field technician with Perdue Farms. Raymond was in his element when he was outside working with his hands, either in the yard, garden or tinkering with his many mechanical devices. He spent many years as a member of the volunteer fire department in Sharpsburg; a means for him to help others. He was also a long-time member of Sharpsburg Baptist Church. His two Irish Setters were a great source of joy for him. He spent many hours with them wandering the fields of his uncle's farm. Raymond was an avid reader and spent countless hours with his books and periodicals, using his knowledge to strike up many a conversation with strangers, a trait he inherited from his father. Raymond served two terms as a town commissioner in Sharpsburg and he was energized by the chance to help lead the town where he spent his life; using his clear, logical and progressive thinking to improve his hometown. Large in stature and larger in heart, he was truly a kind and gentle soul; his family is proud of his journey and saddened by his early passing. He was predeceased by his parents, Raymond Harrison Moore, Sr. and Helen Davis Moore, and sister-in-law Kathy Moss Moore. He is survived by his brother, Thomas A. Moore and wife, Debra and niece, Rachel Moore. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Burial will follow at Mill Branch Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home.
