Peggy Varnell Brake

ROCKY MOUNT - Peggy Varnell Brake, age 84, passed away on Friday, June 11, 2021. Born in Greene County, NC on November 2, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Albert Leslie Varnell and Doretha Strickland Varnell Vainwright. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Paul Leslie Varnell, Mack Fleming Varnell, Linwood "Smarty" Hilton Varnell, and Robert Varnell; her sister Ellen Varnell Forehand; and sister-in-law Louise Varnell. Peggy was a member of Pleasant Hill Primitive Baptist Church for over 50 years. Following 38 years of working for A&P Grocery, she went to work for the Edgecombe County School System for 15 years until her retirement in 2010. Peggy was very devoted to her family and always enjoyed the time spent whether it was cooking for family gatherings, playing cards every Saturday night with her siblings, or cracking a joke or two at the dinner table as she had a very colorful sense of humor. She especially enjoyed tending to her garden where every summer she would freeze and can various vegetables. Peggy also belonged to the West Edgecombe Baptist Church Young at Heart group where she created many fond memories with other members. A devoted wife, loving mother, sister-in-law, and dear friend to many, Peggy will be dearly missed by all those who knew her. Peggy is survived by her husband of 64 years, Percy Willard Brake; her son, Albert "Rodney" Brake and his wife, Sherrie of Rocky Mount; her sister, Doris Varnell Pittman of Fountain; sisters-in-law Jean Varnell of Farmville, Katie Varnell of Rocky Mount, and Mary Alice Varnell of Pinetops; brother-in-law Cecil Forehand of Pinetops; and many nieces and nephews. A Private Family Graveside Service will be held at a later date at Williams Family Cemetery with Rev. David Taylor officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives on Sunday, June 13, 2021, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.
