Mary Devane Higson

Dateline: Battleboro Mrs. Mary Devane Higson, age 99, of Battleboro, NC, died Friday, August 20, 2010. Born on April 1, 1911 in Sampson County, NC, she was a daughter of the late George and Mittie DeVane. Mrs. Higson was a charter member of Arlington Baptist Church, and she attended for as long as she could drive. Later in life she joined the Redhots, playing her washboard. They played for churches, rest homes, and assisted living facilities. She received as much joy as they gave to many. She is survived by her daughter, Patsy and her husband, Mickey Bulluck of Battleboro; son, Bill and his wife, Wanda Higson of Rocky Mount; sister, Arkie Andrews of Tarboro; grandchildren, Chris Bulluck of Battleboro, Jay Bulluck of Battleboro, Kelly and her husband, Rick Philips of Battleboro, Ashley Higson of Nashville, and Brandon Higson of Raleigh; and great-grandchildren, Lauren Bulluck of Battleboro, Joshua Bulluck of Battleboro, Jordan Philips of Battleboro, and Alex Philips of Battleboro. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Booth Higson; sisters, Ruth Gurganus and Mattie Draughon; brothers, Samuel DeVane and George DeVane; and grandchildren, Joey Bulluck, Jeffrey Bulluck, and Chad Higson. The family would like to thank Pat Pittman for all the love and care she gave during Mrs. Higson's illness. They would also like to extend a very special thank you to Shannon Burns with Community Home Health and Hospice in Tarboro. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, August 22, 2010 in the Chapel of Wheeler Woodlief Funeral Home. The Rev. Horace Ward will officiate. Burial will be at Pineview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 PM, one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home.
