Marie Layton Chadwick

ROCKY MOUNT - Marie Layton Chadwick, age 90, passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2017. Born in Franklin County, NC on October 7, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Layton and Bessie Abernathy Layton. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Robert “Bob” Winfield Chadwick; her siblings, Eleanor Edwards, Lucy Cannady, Julius “Billy” Layton, Ronald Layton, and Ernestine “Poppy” Layton; sisters-in-laws, Agnes Layton and Barbara Layton; and brothers-in-laws, Russell Nelms, David Edwards, and Jones Cannady. Marie married her true love, Bob, on September 3, 1950, and was always by his side until his passing on April 13, 1995. Since that time she has dearly missed his companionship and love and now has been reunited with her other half. Marie had a servants heart, having always opened her home and heart to those around her. A registered nurse until her retirement following 45 years, her caring personality and love for others was especially a unique gift to many mothers and babies as her work as an OBGYN nurse. She received her degree in nursing from Parkview Hospital School of Nursing. Her career in nursing touched many lives from working at Parkview Hospital, Duke Hospital, Sanatorium, and retiring from Nash General Hospital. Maries faith in her Lord and Savior and commitment to her church, First United Methodist Church, was the center of her life. She gave to the church and to her community her time whether it was through Bible School, the Garden Club, her Bridge Club, Book Club, or traveling on mission trips through the church. Many will remember her southern cooking, which she shared with everyone. Above all, her most cherished memories will be those spent with her family. Marie was a loving wife, enduring mother, caring grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother. Most of all she was the most wonderful of friend, and her heart and spirit will forever be remembered. Marie leaves behind to cherish her memory, son, Robert Chadwick and his wife, Rebecca, of Rocky Mount; and two daughters, Anita Bissette and her husband, Wayne, of Wilmington, and Janet Chadwick of Durham. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Elizabeth “Betsy” Conmy and her husband, Robert, Caitlin Bissette, Christie Joyner and her husband, Johnny, Melissa Causey and her husband, William “Boo”; five great-granddaughters; 2 great-grandsons; and one great great-granddaughter. She is also survived by her brothers, Ernest “Buck” Layton and his wife, Clara, and James “Jimmy” Layton and his wife, Irene; her sisters, Mavis Nelms, Sue Leonard and her husband, Darrel, and Annette Roberson and her husband, Larry; a sister-in-law, Jennie Layton; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 3:00 PM at First United Methodist Church, 100 S. Church Street, Rocky Mount with the Pastor Jim Bell officiating. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Chadwick Scholarship, 100 S. Church Street, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
