Marian Florine Viverette

Marian Florine Morris Viverette, a long-time resident of Penick Village in Southern Pines, died on February 25. She was born on October 5, 1924, in Atlantic, NC, to Cecil Owen Morris and Mary Connor Morris. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, the Reverend Jacob A. Viverette, Jr. Survivors include her daughters, Mary V. Bowers (Gene) of Raleigh, Lee V. Jones (Ken) of Garner, Brooke V. Holt (Frank) of Warrenton and son, Christopher M. Viverette of Sanford. She is survived by her grandchildren Laura Butler, Scott Bowers, Kristen Eads, Katie Jones, John Holt and Julia Holt. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren. Flo received a Bachelor of Arts from East Carolina Teachers College and a Master of Arts in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She did graduate work towards a PhD in English at Chapel Hill. Schools where she taught English include the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, Winston-Salem State University, the University of Maryland and the University of Tennessee. In her retirement years she taught a class on aging at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, NC. Flo's life was marked by a passion for social justice. More importantly, she was a scholar who loved books and learning. She possessed an amazing memory and was able to quote poetry until the end of her life. A memorial service will be held at the Penick Village Chapel in Southern Pines, NC, on Monday, March 2, at 11:00. The family will receive visitors after the service. Inurnment will follow at Battleboro Cemetery in Battleboro, NC later that afternoon. Memorials may be sent to Penick Village, 500 East Rhode Island Avenue, Southern Pines, NC 28387.
