Margaret Sherrod Fountain passed away peacefully on Monday, January 1, 2018, after an extended illness. Margaret was born on November 4, 1935, to John M. and Mary B. Sherrod. She lived in Enfield, NC until she graduated from Enfield High School and left home to attended St. Mary's College in Raleigh before she transferred to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill where she graduated in 1957, with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. She was presented by the Terpsichorean Club of Raleigh and made her debut in 1955. Margaret married the late David H. Jones, M.D. on December 28, 1956, while student teaching during her senior year of college. The couple moved to Traverse City, Michigan for her husband's internship after medical school, and then to Fort Stewart, Georgia for two years, where their first daughter, Mary Ruth, was born. After David's military service, they moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where her husband attended the University of Michigan's Ophthalmology Residency Program, and their second daughter, Elizabeth, was born. Then, after a brief time living in Smithfield, NC, the couple settled in Raleigh, where she gave generously of herself to her family and her community. She was an active member of the Medical Auxiliary, St. Timothy's Church and School, Garden Club, and Meals on Wheels. She taught her daughters the importance of community involvement and was a loving mother and wife. After her first marriage ended in 1978, Margaret moved back to Enfield, and renewed a friendship with the late Frederick B. Fountain. Margaret and Fred married on May 23, 1986, and lived in Tarboro, NC. Margaret moved to The Fountains at Albemarle in Tarboro in January 2008, where she lived independently for many years until her death. She enjoyed the many friends both residents and staff that she made there. Margaret will be remembered for her generous, kind, and fun spirit, and her devotion to her family.
Margaret is survived by her two daughters, Mary Ruth J. Pupa and her husband Edward ("Ed") R. Pupa, and Elizabeth J. Dempster and her husband Joseph ("Bo") B. Dempster, Jr. She is also survived by her four grandchildren who brought her much joy in her later years - Sarah E. Pupa, John C. Pupa, Joseph ("Jack") B. Dempster, III and Kathryn ("Kate") A. Dempster.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful staff at The Fountains at Albemarle for their care and compassion, especially during the last year.
A private burial will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield on Thursday, January 4, 2018.

Margaret served on Alter Guild at Calvary Episcoal Church with me for many years. She was such a kind and caring person, and I was very fond of her. She always spoke of her obviously beloved daughters. I am sad to hear of your loss, and extend to you and your families my sympathy
