Lois Chewning Proctor age 71 of Rocky Mount passed away September 11, 2011. Born March 27, 1940 in Edgecombe County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Hattie Ramsey Chewning. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles, Bennette, and Thomas Chewning.
In her early career she worked 15 years for Schlage Lock Company as a production supervisor and later worked 12 years at Tri-County Industries as a supervisor. She later started her own company, Best Way Sub-Contractors working for different local companies.
Her dream was to own her own restaurant so Lois opened Sisters' Family Restaurant in Rocky Mount in 1999 in which she operated until her retirement in 2009. Her talents in cooking brought many people to her restaurant to eat her country cooking. Her specialties were barbeque chicken, potato salad, and her homemade desserts. She is known for her chocolate pie and that perfect meringue.
She loved her family and was always "Mother" to her sisters and family. If one was sick and needed something, Lois was the first to make sure that need was taken care of.
She was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and great friend to all of her family. The joy of her life was doing for others and making everybody happy.
Lois leaves to cherish her memory, one daughter, Cindy Thorne and husband, Dennis Thorne; two grandsons, Travis and Dustin Thorne: sisters, Broadus Cobb, Rachel Sexton, Doris Godwin, JoAnn Hayes (Robert), Carolyn Atkinson (John); friend, Linda Burgess, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

I met Lois when I became employed with Schlage Lock Company in the seventies. She was my supervisor for years. Not only was she a good supervisor as far as doing her duties, but she became a great friend as well. She wore two hats at Schlage Lock. She was a supervisor and became a mother to her employees. She cared, listened and counseled her staff. She was always there for us if we needed her. She will be missed by many. May God bless her family and comfort them during this time of sorrow. Rev. Preston Holmes
