ROCKY MOUNT - Lenell Matthews Lucas Wilkins, age 78, passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2020. Born in Nash County, NC on March 5, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Matthews and Anne Lee Wilkins of Bailey. She was also preceded in death by her son, Erzell Lucas.
Lenell was born a twin and was one of thirteen children born and raised by her loving parents. As a twin, she shared a close bond with her twin brother. A 1963 graduate of Springfield High School, Lenell was married to the late James Earl Lucas and through this union her three sons and daughter were born. An inspiration to everyone she encountered, she dearly loved her family and friends, especially enjoying the fellowship and memories created throughout the years. An excellent cook, at any given time Lenell always had a meal prepared and welcomed all to her table, as cooking was one of her favorite hobbies.
One of her favorite things she looked forward to each year was hosting the annual Family Reunion. What a wonderful event that would be…feasting with family and friends; all would gather for a weekend of fun and association! Lenell loved life and people. She enjoyed gardening and crossword puzzles as she believed firmly in keeping the mind sharp. She showed love wherever she went, and to whomever she met. Lenell will truly be missed for the kind, giving and unselfish love she displayed throughout her 78 years on earth.
Lenell is survived by her daughter, Teresa Lucas; sons, Johnnie Earl Lucas and Gerald Lucas; her six grandchildren; Brandon, Tony, Natasha, Shavara, Kayla, and Jordan Lucas; and six great grandchildren. She also leaves behind to cherish her memory her brothers, Russell Matthews, her twin brother Percell Matthews, Bobby Matthews, Thomas "Kenny" Matthews, Freeman Matthews, and George Matthews; sisters, Peggy Matthews Boone, Colene Matthews Best, Blonzetta Matthews Wilder; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

To my niece Teresa and nephews Johnny &Gerald with deep sympathy, my love and prayers are extended to you. I missed my weekly visits with Lenell at the nursing home after they stopped visitation because of the virus. I prayed with her a number of times and the last visit I had with her at the hospice center I prayed again. Now I pray that God will continue to give you all strength in this time of grief. Keep all your memories of your mom close to ❤. I love you all and I’m here.
The Lucas and Wilkins family of Lenell do have my deepest sympathy during this time of the loss of your love one. May Lord forever bless you all at this, the Lord never make a mistake, he was ready for his child to come home.. May God strengthen you. Emma and Stevie Sessoms and the Sessoms Family
