Kirby Lee Everette, 80, died August 14, 2012 at his home in Battleboro. He was the son of Percy Lee and Ella Belle Greene Everette.
Kirby was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dorothy; his daughter, Nelda; and his son, Mike.
Kirby Everette is survived by his wife, Shirley Wall Everette; brothers, Ray (Bernice) and Lisk (Jean); three sons, Kip (Cathy Brown), David (Tami), Grant (Susan) and their families; Jamie Everette, Mikes widow; and stepson, Shane Richardson (Pam) and his family; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Robert, Ada, Emma, Anna, and Collin. The many nieces and nephews will always remember Uncle Kirby.
Kirby Everette was an athlete, a farmer, a businessman and a family man. He graduated from Whitakers High School where he was a star athlete in football and basketball. After graduation he attended Chowan College where he helped launch the schools athletic program.
The football player turned farmer after graduation and became aware of the agricultural needs of the area. In 1962 he became the owner of E-B Grain Company. Shortly thereafter, he became a member of the Southeastern Grain Association.
Country and community interested Kirby. When he was a young man, he joined the Army Reserves. He joined the Battleboro Volunteer Fire Department and remained a member for many years.
He had other special interests. At one time, he was a board member for Wachovia Bank. He was a lifetime member of the Battleboro United Methodist Church.
Kirby Everette knew how to have fun. When his football career ended, he became an ardent Redskins fan. Finally, he found an individual sport he enjoyed. He became an avid golfer. At one time he was a member of four country clubs; Birchwood, Northgreen, Benvenue and Wilson. In 1969 he was the club champion at Birchwood.
Through the years, the beach became the only place for a family vacation and fishing was the reason. In 1973 Kirby built one of the first houses at Emerald Isle. It was on the beachfront. In 1995 Kirby the family exchanged the beach house for condos at Olde Town Yacht Club. Today each son has a fishing boat of his own.
The members of the Everette family want to express their appreciation to the staff and employees of E-B Grain for their loyal support now and in the years past.
A graveside service will be held at the Battleboro Cemetery at 11:00a.m. on August 17, 2012. Visitation will follow at the cemetery.
