Kenchion Earl Pittman, 96, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2012. Earl was born in Nash County on October 13, 1915 to the late John Robert and Hattie Barnes Pittman. In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Margaret Garvey Pittman, and his loving son, Melvyn Earl Pittman.
Earl served his country as a burner in the Newport News Shipyard during World War II. During that time, he helped build the aircraft carrier, USS Yorktown, which he proudly visited in recent years at its dock in Charleston, South Carolina. After the war, he founded Carolina Concrete Block Works which he owned from 1945 until 1981. He also founded Carolina Ready Mix Company. Earl was a charter member of the Stoney Creek Fire and Rescue Department as well as an active member of the Rocky Mount Planning Board and the Benvenue Ruritan Club. He loved gardening, fishing, and hunting and spent many pleasant hours pursuing these hobbies. Friends and family were grateful to receive many a fine deer stew and the most delicious fresh produce around from this generous man. Earl Pittman never knew a stranger. All who met him recall his incredible zest for life. He taught us by example to live every day to the fullest.
The other members of Earls family wish to express profound gratitude to his grandson, Allen, for his tireless dedication and loving care of this special man.
Earl is survived by his son, Kenneth “Jerry” and wife Rebecca; daughter, Lynn Pittman Bell and husband, Jerry; daughter-in-law, Sandra Pittman Biggs; 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

If only for one day I could live your life and your adventures, with a loving family at my side – I would be content to be an angel in heaven. Uncle Earl was most kind, funny, generous and loved all us cousins!! I have special memories of spending many summers at the concrete house helping out in the garden. We had great times at Pamlico Sound where Uncle Earl and Aunt Margaret had a summer home. Everyone always felt welcomed. I will miss his wit, humor and unconditional love……that’s the type of man he was. I love you Uncle Earl and will see you one day – what stories we can tell. Your neice – Sharron
Jerry, Patsy Taylor Brock told me of the loss of your father. I have fond memories way back when in the 1950’s at Pamlico enjoying your kindness in boating and skiing. I know from the obit that your Dad was a special man and was loved by many, as well as family. Molly Arnold Roberts, Asheboro, NC
Jerry and Becky, so sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you….an old friend Patsy Taylor Brock, Bailey, NC
I will always remember fishing with Papa and Carly on his pier. We caught probably 70 fish that day! They were biting faster than we could bait our hooks. I also remember walking with him on the beach, going down to watch people fish on the pier. Another favorite memory is when I was very young and we were shucking corn. After all the jobs were given out, I asked what I should do. Papa told me to Sit there in front of the fan and look pretty. That memory always makes me smile!
I had the pleasure of meeting Earl 3 years ago. He was a wonderful man full of spirit. I enjoyed every minute I had the opportunity to be around him, from eating dinner with him to fishing on his pier. He was truly an inspiration to everyone to live your life to the fullest. Julie Goodsell
Having met Mr.Pittman several times over the years that I’ve worked with Mark, I can honestly say he enjoyed life. The stories I heard Mr.Pittman tell as well as the stories Mark told of his Granddaddy spoke of a man who knew a lot about life by living it to the fullest. His wit and charm will be missed.
20 years ago or so, Mr Pittman would come into the Log Cabin Store on Hwy 97. He was always so so friendly. all the girls there loved him. He said he came there because the prettiest women worked there. I remember Mary asked him what attracted him to his wife all those years ago.. He smiled and said Why ….she was the prettiest of all the girls,. I had to grab her before someone else did, So so so sweet….
