Joseph "Sonny" Herbert Slater, Jr.

ROCKY MOUNT – Joseph Herbert "Sonny" Slater Jr. passed away on May 23, 2023. He was born on April 2, 1932 to Joseph “Herbert” Slater Sr. and Lucille Slater. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William Thomas "Tommy" Slater. He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Linda Leonard Slater and daughter, Susan Tompkins of Wilmington. His grandchildren, Joseph Tompkins (Kristina), Sarah Tompkins, both of Wilmington and Tripp Nanney of Colorado. Two great grandchildren, Violet and Logan Nanney of Colorado. Aunt Virgina Ann Mckee and Uncle Dick Slater, both of Virginia. Sonny is also survived by nieces and nephews, Willa Hudanich and Jeff Slater of New Jersey and Bill Slater of Florida. Also, Joyce Swartz, Ellen Leonard, Robin Griffin, Howard Leonard and Robert Leonard, all of Rocky Mount. A celebration of Sonny’s life will be held on Sunday, May 28, 2023, at 3:00 PM at Edgemont Baptist Church, 1622 West Mount Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27803 with Reverend Michael Edwards officiating. Visitation with the family will follow the service until 5:30 P.M. in the Sanctuary of Edgemont Baptist Church. A Private Family Burial will take place at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Sonny’s memory to Edgemont Baptist Church (PO Box 7293, Rocky Mount, NC 27804) or Nash Hospice and Palliative Care (2460 Curtis Ellis Drive, Building 100, Rocky Mount, NC 27804).
