Joseph E. Porter
April 22, 1947 ~ October 20, 2022
ROCKY MOUNT – Joseph Evrid Porter, age 75, passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2022. Born in Nash County, NC on April 22, 1947, he was the son of the late Lattie Evrid “L.E.” Porter and Lillie Elizabeth Coggin Porter. Joseph preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn Carol Rooks Porter.
Joseph was a 1965 graduate of Nashville High School where he played baseball and basketball and attended Gardner Webb College and Barton College (formally Atlantic Christian). A veteran of the US Navy, he retired after over 20 years from the State of North Carolina Department of Public Safety as a Correctional Officer at Caledonia and Nash Correctional Institution. Joseph was a member of Gethsemane Independent Baptist Church and was an avid Atlanta Braves Baseball and Carolina Basketball fan. A loving and devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many, Joseph will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Joseph is survived by his son, Joseph Sherwood “Eugene” Porter and wife Shawn; his daughters, Lorrin Elizabeth Porter and Alicia Carol Porter; his grandson, Jordan Wesley Porter; his sister, Ann Porter Thomas and husband Jerry; his sisters-in-law, Angela Casey and husband Morgan and Germaine Dunn and husband Mike; his long-time friends, Floyd Groome and Jason Jones; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Joseph’s Life will be held on Friday, October 28, 2022, at 6:30 PM at Gethsemane Independent Baptist Church, 3539 London Church Road, NE, Elm City, NC 27822 with Pastor Johnny Taylor officiating. A visitation will be from 5:30 PM to 6:15 PM prior to the service in the Sanctuary Gethsemane Independent Baptist Church.

Joseph was a man that loved the lord, loved his wife,Gwen and his children and grandson! Joseph came to see me when he needed a haircut and we would talk about, his son, grandson and daughters whom he loved very much! We would talk about our lord and how happy we would be to see our loved ones that were waiting for us! So I know Joseph is looking on our saviors face and walking hand in hand with his wife Gwen! RIP Joseph you Will surely be missed by all!
Joseph was a friend to everyone he met. Joseph always put others before himself and was such a kind and generous man. Joseph treated me just like a son for nearly 40 years and I will always be thankful for having him in my life! Until we meet again Jumping Joe I love you man!!
