Johnny Mize Wooten

Johnny Mize Wooten, age 70, died Saturday, October 29, 2011 after a prolonged illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Patricia Farris Wooten; his son, Jay Wooten and wife Leah; his daughter, Mary Kathryn (Kathy) McDonald of Suwanee GA; grandchildren, Abigail, Isabel, Duncan Wooten and Ben McDonald; brother, Aubrey Wooten and wife Jeannie of Fort Worth TX; sister-in-law, Doris Wooten of Rocky Mount; and several nieces and nephews. Johnny, born in Tarboro, was preceded in death by his parents, Seba and Minnie Wooten; and his brother, Maddry. He was an outstanding athlete at Benvenue High School and a graduate of Atlantic Christian College. He owned various businesses in Rocky Mount including Wooten Builders, J&M Takeout, and the Dairy Bar. Johnny served in the United States Marine Corps and was a member of the American Legion. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an Exalted Ruler of the Elks and a member of the Lions Club and the Jaycees. Mass and a Celebration of his life will be held at 2:30pm on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with visitation following in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to: Knights of Columbus, 745 Brassie Club Drive, Rocky Mount NC 27804 or the Marine Corps League, P.O. Box 456, Red Oak NC 27868.   1. I just want to say that I am sorry about Johnny. I went to Benvenue School with Johnny and Aubrey. Johnny was just a grade below me. I will have great memories of him. Vernelle Greene Hiatt

  2. BEING HIS BROTHER I GO WAY BACK TO OUR CHILD HOOD. IN TARBORO THE COLE FIGHTS THAT GAVE HIM THAT LITTLE BLACK MARK ON HIS FOREHEAD, OUR BB GUN FIGHTS WHERE I EMBEDDED A BB UNDER THE SKIN OF HIS FOREHEAD . I WENT HOME CRYING AND SCARED – I THOUGHT I HAD KILLED MY LITTLE BROTHER(GUESS I WAS JUST A BROTHER). THEN THE YEARS OF FIGHTS WE HAD ON THE FIELD OF FOOTBALL WHERE HE EXCELLED AND ALSO IN BASKETBALL. I LOVE YOU LITTLE BROTHER AND I THINK OF SPORTS, COLE AND BB GUNS NOW WITH BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES.   3. Johnny was an easy-going person with a great sense of humor. Linda & I send our condolences and best wishes to Pat and every member of his family.   8. Johnny was fun to be married to. He had such a quick wit and was very supportive of me and my undertakings. Anyone who knew him, knew he was an avid sports fan, especially Duke University sports. He was also ultra conservative. Federal government infuriated him. Thanks to all who have remembered him in some way.
