John Wade VanHoose

John Wade VanHoose, 92, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2010. He was born December 17, 1917 in Jacksboro TX, son of the late John and Ida VanHoose. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Revis F. VanHoose and four sisters, Mary, Ida Bell, Cleo and Eula Mae. John proudly served his country in the United States Navy achieving the rank of Master Chief retiring after 30 years in 1970. He also served during World War II and afterwards served on the U.S.S. Williamsburg that was President Harry Truman's yacht. He also served during the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam Conflict, and the Seven Day War in the Mediterranean . John was very active in the community. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Methodist Men, VFW, Fleet Reserve, J.O.Y. Group, the Golden East Mall Walkers, Red Cross, Master Gardener of Virginia Beach. He was also a Master Mason in the Anacostia Lodge in Washington DC. In his later years, John was employed by Southland Corporation as a Distribution Representative and retired after 10 years of service. John leaves behind to cherish his memory, Son, Jay VanHoose and wife Elaine of Rocky Mount; sister, Lydia Joyner of Overton TX; three grandsons, Christopher VanHoose and wife Laura, Jonathan VanHoose and wife Niki, and Stephen VanHoose and wife Kelley Dildy; two step grandsons, Scott Ghiloni and wife Jo and Eric Ghiloni and wife Brandie. He is also survived by one great-grandson, Stephen VanHoose Jr. and four step great-grandchildren, Sidney, Ethan, Lucas, and Caroline Ghiloni. The family will receive friends and relatives from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home and other times at the home of Jay VanHoose. A service to honor John will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 29, 2010 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Marty Cauley officiating. Burial will follow in Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
