John V. Denton, Sr.

ROCKY MOUNT - John V. Denton, Sr., age 78, passed away on Friday, February 11, 2022. Born in Halifax County, NC on March 17, 1943, he was the son of the late Charlie Denton and Rena Morgan Denton. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Ann Harris Denton; his brother, Emily Denton; and his sister, Agnes Shephard. A man of great faith, John was a member of Arlington Baptist Church for over 50 years. As a licensed insurance agent for Farm Bureau, he retired following over 37 years of dedicated service in which he held several positions throughout those years along with many accomplishments and achievements. Having never met a stranger, John had a unique personality which many would naturally gravitate to allowing him to forge many lasting friendships and relationships along the way. Outside of his career in insurance, he especially enjoyed traveling, visiting the mountains, but most importantly he cherished his family, especially his grandchildren. A loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, colleague, and dear friend to many, John will be always remembered and forever missed. John is survived by his sons, John V. "Van" Denton, Jr. and his wife, Annette, of High Point and Charles A. Denton and his wife, Donna, of Spring Hope; his grandchildren, Melanie Denton Foster and husband, Leighton, John V. Denton, III, Zachary Denton and wife Codi, Mia Denton, Caroline Denton, McKenzie Latham and fianc Lorenzo Valdez, and Chase Latham; his great-grandchild, Damian Valdez; his brother, Douglas Denton; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service to celebrate John's life will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Arlington Baptist Church, 1500 Bethlehem Rd, Rocky Mount, NC 27803. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in John's memory to Arlington Baptist Church, 1500 Bethlehem Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27803.   1. Van, Charles & families, I am so very saddened by your father’s passing. He was our insurance agent until his retirement as well as a personal friend. We have always loved him.   4. I have known John since I was a small child. He was a family friend and came by often to visit. He is one of the nicest people I have ever known. We I got married he took care of our insurance needs until his retirement. He and Barbara were good people. He will be greatly missed.

  24. I am very sorry to hear of Mr. Denton’s passing. He was my insurance agent years ago and was very kind and helpful. I was young and had a new Mustang and was upset because some debris from the road hit it and bent the antenna. He was very kind and helped me with that even though it wasn’t really supposed to be covered. He was a fine man. Later in life I met his son Charlie and he’s a great guy too. My sincere condolences to the family. May God rest his soul.
