Jean Chesson Couch

Jean Chesson Couch, of Rocky Mount, NC, 91 years of age, passed away at her home on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 with her daughter,Karen Couch and her longtime friend, Nancy Snowden by her side. Jean was the only child of Otis Alfred Chesson and Iva Swain Chesson and was born in Washington County, NC in 1925. Jean was a 1947 graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and was a lifelong Tarheel fan. She was a teacher in the Rocky Mount School system, having retired in 1976. Family and friends knew Jean for her independent spirit, her quick wit and sharp mind, her never-ending search for the perfect fried oyster, and her unique poetic stylings. Jean enjoyed playing golf and sheloved both pier and surf fishing along the NC coast. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Clay Couch, Jr. and by their two sons, Clay Chesson Couch and James Wesley Couch. She is survived by her daughter Karen Louisa Couch, grandchildren, Jonathan Couch and Meredith Couch, and by two great-grandchildren, Corly and Ceci Jackson. Jean is also survived by her sister-in-law, Barbara Couch, special cousins, Jan Weaver and Jackie Leary and other extended family members. The family offers special thanks to Bea Rackley, Trudy Martin, Mike and Marion Shorter, Wilhemina Robinson, Diane Affonso and the staff of Hospice Palliative Care of Nash General. Friends, neighbors and caregivers, you each have helped Jean lead her life as she wished it to be. A Funeral Service for Jean will be held at West Haven Presbyterian Church, 1001 West Haven Blvd, Rocky Mount, NC at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 14, 2016.   1. We will miss our dear friend Jean. Her laughter , intellect, and fun nature is what we will always remember. A 58 year old friendship that was and will always be truly treasured. Our love goes out to Karen and a great deal of respect for her honor and steadfast loyalty to her mom during a very difficult time. We love you Karen. Nita and Ginger

  2. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Jean. I am trying to locate Karen who is a cousin of mine. Otis Chesson and Sadie Chesson Manning were brother and sister.
