James Glenn Cockrell

April 12, 1947 ~ November 17, 2020

ROCKY MOUNT - Beloved father and g-daddy, James Glenn Cockrell passed away peacefully listening to Carolina Beach Music on Tuesday, November 17, 2020. Born in Nash County, N.C. on April 12, 1947, he was the son of the late James Paul Cockrell and Fannie Estelle Joyner Cockrell. He was also preceded in death by his sister Wanda Cockrell Robbins and niece Cynthia Robbins. Glenn worked at Thorpe Music Co for more than 40 years. He served his country in the United States Army during Vietnam and was a proud Veteran. Glenn was a member of the Rocky Mount Masonic Lodge Corinthian #230 for 36 years, where he was made a Master Mason. He was also a member of the Rocky Mount Shrine Club where he participated in many community focused events and parades. Glenn was an active member of the Northside Community Church of Rocky Mount. He was a member of the Eastern North Carolina Shag Club. Glenn was a loving brother, uncle, father and g-daddy. He loved his family and God and was a great example and role model of a Christian man who was honest and sincere. Glenn loved to shag dance and socialize. He never met a stranger. He always had a joke to tell with every story. He will be missed by many. Glenn is survived by his daughter, Alicia Cockrell Ross and husband, Eric, of Durham; grandchildren Bryant and Teagan Ross; former spouse Tessie Cockrell; brother Grady Cockrell; nephews Allen Cockrell and Michael Cockrell. A private family memorial service was held Saturday November 21, 2020 at Northside Community Church of Rocky Mount officiated by Pastor Mark Lee Pridgen. The family plans on having a celebration of life event at a later date to be determined in 2021. The family would like to say special thanks to UNC Nash CVICU, all of the shag community, Northside Community Church, and his countless friends.
