Harold Allyn Smith

Harold Allyn Smith, age 89, passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2014. Born in Sellars, South Carolina on April 8, 1925, he was the son of Harold Allyn Smith, Sr. and Martha ("Mattie") Smith. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Newell P. Smith and two sisters, Betty Jo Hooks and Jessie Rose McQueen. Harold was raised in Whiteville, NC. He entered the Air Force in 1943 and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1970, with several awards and decorations. During his military time, he served in the United States and abroad. World War II ended while he was attending B-26 school with the expectation of being sent to a combat assignment. During the Korean War, he flew the maximum of fifty-five missions in to North Korea and during the Vietnam War, he was deployed twelve to fifteen times where he navigated KC97's, KC135s to refuel bombers and fighters over North and South Vietnam. Following retirement, he worked as an insurance adjuster and retired in 2004. He is survived by his wife, Mary Shiveley Smith. He is also survived by one daughter, Julia Smith Winslow and her husband, Mark of Ellenboro, NC; and two sons, Randy Smith of Rocky Mount, NC and Scott Smith and his wife, Terri of Apex, NC. Harold is survived by three grandchildren, Morgan Smith, Greyson Smith and Bryan Winslow. Also surviving are two step-daughters, Mary Hewett and her husband Steve of Wilson, NC and Gloria Shiveley of Apex, NC; one step-grandson and two step great-grandchildren. Harold is survived by one brother, Felix Smith of Baton Rouge, LA. A memorial service to remember Harold will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Englewood Presbyterian Church with Dr. Robert Westlund officiating. Visitation with the family will be held from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Englewood Presbyterian Church, 100 Englewood Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
