Gertrude Lancaster Worrell

Gertrude Lancaster Worrell, age 96, went home to Heaven Sunday, July 10, 2011. A native of Edgecombe County, she was born January 29, 1915, and was the daughter of the late Joe and Mattie Lancaster. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thurston Edward Worrell. Ms. Gertrude (as everyone called her) lived a long and good life. She grew up on a small farm, married a farmer and worked hard to improve the quality of life for her family. In her younger years, she was very active in the West Edgecombe School community and Edgecombe County home demonstration programs. She later became a sales associate for several local department stores in Rocky Mount. Ms. Gertrude enjoyed sewing and was also a very good cook. She was always baking a cake for someone's birthday, especially for her family. She is now at peace with the Lord. She leaves behind her daughter, Christine W. Shirley of Nashville; son, Kenneth E. Worrell and wife, Judy, of Bedford TX; six grandchildren, Will Shirley of Keller TX, Edward Shirley of Raleigh NC, Chris Shirley of Jamestown NC, Alicia Probasco of Bedford TX, Jennifer Worrell of San Mateo CA, and Sara Worrell-Berg of Chicago IL; and eight great-grandchildren. She will also be remembered by her sister, Elizabeth Gardner of Randallstown MD. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Thursday, July 14, 2011 at Englewood Presbyterian Church with Rev. Rob Westlund officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery.
