Gertrude Joyner Langley

Gertrude Joyner Langley, age 88, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, December 23, 2013. Born in Nash County on February 23, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Joyner and Lillian Carpenter Joyner. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe M. Langley; two brothers, Limb Frank Joyner and James Edward Joyner; and daughter-in-law, Chan “Tau” Langley. Gertrude worked at Guardian Care and Westgate Nursing Home as a nurses aide and housekeeping supervisor. After retirement, Gertrude lived in Orlando, Florida from 1985 to 1999. She was a member of Dover Shores Baptist Church and worked at Dover Shores Elementary School. After returning to Rocky Mount, Gertrude returned her membership to Shenandoah Baptist Church. Gertrude was a charter member of the Down East Ruritan Club. Gertrude enjoyed gardening, singing, volunteering, exercising at the Rocky Mount Senior Center and entertaining weekly for the residents at South Village. She also enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family and friends. She leaves behind her daughter, Patsy L. Larsen and husband Harry of Rocky Mount; two sons, Steven A. Langley and wife Cam of Thomasville NC and Robert T. Langley and wife Diane of Rocky Mount; four grandchildren, Thi Hang Alderman, Rodney Langley, Candy Reichardt and Stewart Larsen; and eight great-grandchildren. She will also be remembered by one step-sister, Madeline B. Winstead of Sneeds, FL; and one brother, Lee Horace Joyner of Rocky Mount. A service to remember Gertrude will be held at 11:00am Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Shenandoah Baptist Church with Rev. Glenn Hill officiating. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
