ROCKY MOUNT - George Roosevelt Batts, Jr., age 90, entered Heaven on Friday, June 8, 2018. Born in Johnston County, NC on August 3, 1927, he was the son of the late George Roosevelt Batts, Sr. and Sallie Mae Nolley Batts. He was also preceded in death by his son, George Roosevelt Batts III; brother, Garland Batts; and sister, Nellie Gray Batts.
George served his country in the United States Army and the Navy. He and his wife, Frances, have been longtime members of Englewood Presbyterian Church where he served as a Sunday School Teacher for many years. George was also a faithful Gideon for many years. Prior to joining the military, he began his career with the United States Post Office until the time he entered the Armed Forces. Following his enlistment, George owned and operated several furniture stores, Enterprise Furniture, and upon his retirement from the furniture business after 22 years, decided it best to return to the postal service from which he retired after over 20 years of dedicated service. A faithful and loving husband to his dear wife Frances of 65 years, a dedicated father to his children, and a true friend to many, George will be dearly missed and never forgotten.
George leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife, Frances Jackson Batts of the home; his daughter, Sandra Batts Lepley and husband, Chet, of Garner; a brother, Gary T. Batts of Hampton, VA; as well as several nieces and nephews.

George was a character. I would greet him with good morning every Sunday and every Sunday George would say What’s good about it That started the conversation … George was a faithful christian and Sunday School teacher and even if had other obligations he would come to church just to teach his lesson even if he could not stay for church. And he was a faithful husband. It was a rare occasion to see George without Frances. They made a good team and were blessed to have one another. It will be odd not to see George in his usual seat at church – he will be sorely missed.

RIP Mr Batts. We did not get to know you well, but we know your daughter. You helped to raise a strong, loving, intelligent and caring woman. We know you are now at peace; we wish the same for Sandy and her family. Love, Staci and Lori
