George Gilbert Pope

George Gilbert Pope, age 88, went home to heaven on Saturday, November 8, 2014. Born in Edgecombe County, NC on March 6, 1926, he is the son of the late Alonzo Leon Pope, Sr. and Emily Stewart Pope. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Anne Pope Hicks Murray and his brother, Alonzo "Jack" Pope, Jr., who died serving his country during World War II. Gilbert proudly served his country in The United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of Battleboro Baptist Church and most recently attended Battleboro Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Battleboro Volunteer Fire Department and was one of two remaining charter members. He retired from Seaboard Coast Line. He was an outdoor enthusiast who loved spending time with family and friends. Gilbert leaves behind his wife of 30 years, Peggy Bulluck Pope; their daughters, Tracy Pope Rojas and her husband, Milton of Chicago, IL; Kimberly Georgette Pope of Durham, NC; Dina Hamad and her partner, Diane of Apex, NC; Audrey Hamad Humphreys and her husband, George of Rocky Mount, NC; and Tina Hamad of Apex, NC. He also leaves behind to cherish his memory, his granddaughters, Alexandra Humphreys and Caroline Olivia Hays. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at 2:00PM at Battleboro Cemetery, 408 W. Battleboro Avenue, Battleboro, NC 27809, with Rev. Patrick Sinclair and Parker Phillips officiating. Visitation will be held at Wheeler Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services Monday, November 10, 2014 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
