George Dewey Gillian

ROCKY MOUNT - George Dewey Gillian, age 73, went into the presence of his Savior on Saturday, September 19, 2020. Born in Mecklenburg County, NC on July 30, 1947, he was the son of the late Samuel Lee Gillian and Maude Friday Gillian. George Gillian was a wonderful teacher, father, grandfather, member of local churches, and husband. He taught school for many years and sold insurance for many years to support his family. He loved playing with his grandchildren and was the favorite grandparent for all 5 of them as they were coming up. They loved to play with Pop-Pop or Gaston (from Beauty and the Beast) as he was nicknamed by his first grandchild. George taught school at Falls Road Baptist Church School for many years and touched many lives including having his house toilet papered often and chasing after the culprits only to laugh about it years later. He had been very involved in the local churches with which he was associated serving as a small group co-leader. He enjoyed studying the Bible, was very eager to discuss anything Biblical, and answer any questions one would have. He also was passionate about UNC basketball, as long as they were winning. He had a great repertoire of dad jokes. George is survived by his wife of 49 years, Linda Hoell Gillian of Rocky Mount; daughters, Audrey Gillian Lewis and her husband, Matthew of Lexington and Lesley Gillian of Raleigh; son, Jonathan Gillian and his wife Tricia of Indian Trail. He also leaves behind to cherish his memory his grandchildren, Makayla Lewis, Ashlyn Lewis, Claire Lewis, Noah Lewis and Eve Gillian; several nephews and nieces. A Celebration of George's Life will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Christ Covenant Church, 3124 Belmont Lake Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27804 with Tim Griffin officiating. A visitation with the family will immediately follow the service in the Narthex of the church until 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in George's memory to Christ Covenant Church, 3124 Belmont Lake Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
