Gary Willard Vick

April 9, 1943 ~ May 13, 2021

ROCKY MOUNT - Gary Willard Vick, age 78, passed away on Thursday, May 13, 2021. Born in Nash County, NC on April 9, 1943, he was the son of the late Lester Gole Vick and Hazel Christine Langley Vick. Gary was the "last troubadour". He enjoyed leaving words of wisdom and telling stories of adventures that will be cherished forever. He was the third of six. Gary leaves behind to cherish his memory a fan base of admirers, cousins and siblings. Gary was proud to have served in the US Coast Guard from July 15, 1962 to July 15, 1965 and was schooled as a Hospital Corpsman in Great Lakes, Illinois. His greatest accomplishment was being a self-taught master of guitar (and many instruments, in fact) and lyrical writer. Gary was talented in so many ways, and his life was one adventurous incident after another. He will be remembered for his gentle nature, compassion and acceptance for others, and certainly his free- spirited way of life. He was "the original" for so many quotes and mannerisms that we will repeat and mimic always. Gary is survived by his sisters, Erline Vick Mazurek, Brenda Curp Vick, Phyllis Vick Naegel, and Debbie Vick Joyner, and her husband, Nils; his brother, Larry Gole Vick; nieces and nephews, Jan Vick Faithful, Jennifer Mazurek, Stephanie Mazurek Varnell, Nikki Joyner Brewster, Kristin Joyner Knox, Ryan Naegel, and Lindsey Naegel; great nieces and nephews, Tatum Faithful Eason, Dustin Tyler Faithful, Fahlon Faithful Brown, Maggie Pittman, Brittany Pittman, Dylan Inscoe, Ella Walker Eason, Nash Brown, Ann-E. Belle Brown, Moss Brewster, Domino Knox, and Ledger Blanton. A Celebration of Gary's Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Gary's memory to your local musicians. Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 1130 N. 7. Brenda, Debbie, Jan and Vick family …. I am so sorry to hear of Gary’s passing. He was a great guy, with such a mild, quite manner about him. I always loved to hear his music, obviously since he sang at our wedding. Our families have certainly not kept in close touch over the years, but I do think of you often in memories and will keep your family in prayers. God bless.
