Elmer Ricks Daniel

SPRING HOPE - Elmer Ricks Daniel passed away Sunday, June 19, 2011. Born July 24, 1911 in Nash County, he was the son of the late Justus Gilbert Daniel and Cornelius Ricks Daniel. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 72 years in 2007, Eva Sledge Ricks Daniel; a daughter, Martha Sledge Daniel; and son Elmer Ricks Daniel Jr. A graduate of North Carolina State College with a B.S. degree in agricultural economics and graduate work at Iowa State College. A veteran of World War II, he was called to active duty in 1942 as a second lieutenant, he emerged approximately four years later with the rank of lieutenant colonel. During service in the European Theatre, he was assigned to the Civil Affairs Division in England, France and Germany. He was awarded the Europe-Africa-Middle East Ribbon with three battle starts and the Bronze Star for meritorious service. He was a former commander of the 3276th Army Reserve Garrison unit in Rocky Mount and past president of the North Carolina Department, Reserve Officers Association. Mr. Daniel made his career as a Nash County Farmer. A civic leader in the community, he held positions as a Nash County Commissioner, Civil Defense Director of Nash and Edgecombe County and Rocky Mount. He was on the Nash Health Care Systems Board, an active member of the North Carolina Farm Bureau and Rocky Mount Kiwanis Club. Mr. Daniel was a member of Stanhope Baptist Church. He is survived by his daughter, Peggy Daniel Looney and husband Tom of Rocky Mount; son, Bert Daniel and wife Frankie of Stanhope; grandchildren, Ashlin Looney Gravely and husband Keen, Stuart Looney Allen and husband William, Elizabeth Looney McGuire and husband Scott, Lisa Daniel Ingram and husband Stephen, and Jennifer Daniel Bridges and husband Travis; and twelve great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 5:00pm to 7:00pm Tuesday, June 21,2011 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home. A private burial will be held Wednesday morning at Pineview Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 2:00pm Wednesday afternoon at Stanhope Baptist Church with Rev. William Allen and Rev. William Bussey officiating.
