Ellen Colbert Hughes

Ellen Colbert Hughes, 83, passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2012. She was born in Edgecombe County on May 19, 1929 to the late Charlie and Chrissy Taylor Colbert. In addition to her parents, Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Hunter Mitchell Hughes (Buddy); twin sister, Nelle Pearl and sister, Effy Mae; brothers, Joe Colbert, George Colbert, John Colbert, Robert Colbert, Charlie Doucey, and an infant brother. Ellen was a homemaker. She was a wife to Hunter Mitchell Hughes (Buddy) and a mother to their three children. Ellen was a loving and caring person. She always tried to help keep the family together. She tried to help anyone in the family she could. Ellen and her late husband, Buddy, raised their three children and helped to raise the grandchildren as well. She will be missed greatly, but will always be in our hearts. She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters, Beth Hughes of Rocky Mount, Carol Teeters and husband, Danny of Texas; son, Steve Hughes; sister, Celia Davis; five grandchildren, Monica Strickland and husband, Johnathon, Jennette Scott, Mitchell Hughes, Frannie Tevepaugh and husband, James, and Stephannie Owens and husband, Steve all of Rocky Mount; six great-grandchildren, Johnathon Strickland, Jr., Samual Strickland, Abbygail Strickland, Alex Tevepaugh, Amber Tevepaugh, Kaylee Owens. A memorial service will be held at 1:30pm Saturday, October 27, 2012 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home with Rev. G.C. Hughes officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives following the service at 3105 E. Gypsy Trail in Rocky Mount.
