Earl Carlton Powell

Earl Carlton Powell Sr. passed into eternity January 11, 2010. Born June 23, 1925 in Nash County, he was the son of David Thomas Powell and Janie Morris Powell. He was preceded in death by siblings, C.H. Powell, Gloria Wingo, and D.T. Powell Jr. He graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High. After serving the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946, he graduated from N.C. State University obtaining a degree in Civil Engineering. Mr. Powell was a member of Second Presbyterian Church until its recent dissolvement. Mr. Powell owned and operated E.C. Powell Construction and Real Estate Company for over 60 years. He developed residential properties in central to eastern North Carolina as well as built nursing home facilities and apartment complexes. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Ruby Pollard Powell and four children and their spouses: Earl Carlton Powell Jr., Deborah Powell Figlewski and husband Stan, John Thomas Powell and wife Lynn, Denise Powell Russell and husband Mark. His grandchildren and their spouses are: Earl Carlton Powell III, Jason Clayton and wife Shannon, Ashley Joyner and husband Phillip, Stash Figlewski, Andy Figlewski , John Powell Jr. and wife Emily, Brad Powell, Carson Russell, Jackson Russell, and Gibson Russell. His great-grandchildren are Abigail and John Powell III, Micah and Afton Joyner, and Jude Clayton. His sister Judy Roberson Dixon and husband Max, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive him. Visitation will be 7-8:30p.m. at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 and at other times at the home of Stan and Debbie Figlewski at 1004 Royal Ridge Drive. A graveside service will be at 11:00a.m. at Pineview Cemetery on Wednesday, January 13, 2010. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Barium Springs Home for Children, P.O.
