Dorothy Ann Proctor Rackley

December 7, 1937 ~ August 15, 2016

ELM CITY - Dorothy Ann Proctor Rackley, age 78, gained her wings to heaven on Monday, August 15, 2016. Born in Edgecombe County, NC on December 7, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Leslie Lee Proctor and Lessie Mae Proctor. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Ward Rackley; and brother, William Lee Proctor. Ann was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She and her husband were soulmates whose love for each other will now continue for all eternity in heaven. For her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was the best role model of what a person should be. A strong shoulder to lean on, a compassionate listener when times were tough, a champion for their triumphs, Mama/Nana always knew exactly the words needed for comfort, strength, or encouragement no matter the situation. She was their everything. Ann was also a beloved sister and the one they turned to for support and counsel as well. Ann was well loved and respected in the medical community and was recognized as “Mrs. Rackley” by her sweet, compassionate voice. She worked for 33 years as the surgical receptionist at Boice-Willis Clinic. In her free time, Ann enjoyed being a floral designer and writer/poet, hobbies at which she excelled magnificently. Ann leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Kimberly Ann Rackley, of the home; three grandchildren, Travis Johnson and his wife, Kelly, of Rocky Mount; Meghan Ballance and her husband, C.W., of Rocky Mount; Corey Johnson of Rocky Mount; and four great-grandchildren, Roan Wachowicz, Liam Ballance, Lukas Ballance, and Mia Ballance, all of Rocky Mount. She also leaves to honor her memory her sister, Deborah Henry and her husband, Clint, of Battleboro; her brother, Alan Proctor and his wife, Bettie, of Old Lyme, CT; and several nieces and nephews who loved Aunt Ann very much. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 19, 2016 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home Cremation Services with Rev. Keith Griffin officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. The family will receive friends and relatives Thursday, August 18, 2016 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home Cremation Services. The family would like to thank the nurses on the 5th floor at Wilson Medical Center and Bobbi and Lynn of Gentiva Hospice for the exceptional and compassionate care they provided, making this difficult time a little more bearable. 1. Ann was such a wonderful and friendly person. I worked with her for 16 years at Boice Willis and we talked just about every day. I pray for peace for the family as I know they will surely miss her.
