Dewey Kent Butler, age 80, left his earthly home on Tuesday, November 08, 2011 to join his Lord and Savior in Heaven. A native of Rocky Mount, he was born on December 28, 1930, the son of the late Wilson John Butler and Pearl Futch Butler. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Violette Butler Howard and Virginia Butler Lewis; and brother, Johnnie Butler.
Dewey attended Rocky Mount Senior High. He served his country in the United States Navy. Dewey started his career at the United States Postal Service. Later, he became self-employed as owner and operator of Butler Wholesale Candy Business, Butlers Grocery and D.K. Butler Realty Company.
Dewey was a former member of West Mount Baptist Church and a current member of Calvary Baptist Church. He served in many areas including Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Baptist Men officer, Evangelism Team member and Cancer Support Group member. Dewey played church league and senior league softball until the age of 79. He joined Campers on Mission in 1991 and participated in many fairs, festivals and rallies over the past 20 years where he was instrumental in leading many people to the Lord.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of 56 years, Gray Long Butler; sons, Derrick Butler and wife Sharon, Barry Butler and wife Paige; daughter, Denise Butler Davis and husband Jimmy; grandsons, Darren Butler and wife Bethany, Cameron Butler, Scott Davis and wife Alexandra, and Zachary Butler; granddaughters, Hilary Butler, Karen Davis Mart and husband Steve, and Ashton Butler; and great-granddaughter, Hartley Rane Butler. He will also be remembered by his brother, Wilson “Pete” Butler and wife Peggy.
The family will receive friends and relatives 6:30pm to 8:30pm Saturday, November 12, 2011 at Wheeler Woodlief Funeral Home and other times at the home. A celebration of Deweys life will be at 2:00pm Sunday, November 13, 2011 at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Brandon Dees officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
