College.I think I took three or four classes .I loved to hear him tell stories about the old days.I loved his smile and his warm and friendly personality.Mr. Matthews was a true gentleman and a kind and giving person.I thought of Mr. Matthews today as I was putting a new bottom in a chair.I’ll always be reminded of him while doing the craft that I learned from him.I pray God will give all of you comfort in the days ahead.Scotty Winstead

  3. If you ever wanted to know what was going on in Rocky Mount whether it be in the neighborhood in which he lived or across town he could tell you. He could tell you what time you left and what time you got home because he made it his job to watch out for his neighbors. If you or anyone in your family were sick he was always asking how you were and if he could do anything. He cared more about people around him than he seemed to worry about himself. He stayed busy between cleaning the yard, taking care of a garden, fixing almost anything, braving his climb on a roof to make sure the pine straw was removed taking his grandchild to work and visiting all his neighbors. He foremost made sure his wife was taken care either when she was at home and when she was away. When he became ill it was a shock it just couldnt be this was a man that did more at his age than most people 60 years younger could even think to do. He stayed busy which kept him young and on the go. He was always smiling even when talking about how he was feeling and what he was going through he smiled through it all. He was one of kind and I have never met another person like him. This world has lost a man that is like no other. When you think of him you could never think about the day he would no longer be here. This just couldnt happen to him of all people. He will be missed and has been missed without seeing him throw that hand up to say hello or stopping you before you got in the house to say hello and how are things going and to update you on the last crime in the area or the strange people who may have been in the area and to give you something from his garden. We are all better people just for knowing him………

  5. I am so sorry for the loss of your father. David was a great person to work with at Sears,he knew the tool department and the paint department. He never got angry or upset even when we took inventory each year. He had a smile and laugh that belonged only to him. When I left Sears in 1987 to take care of my sick mother,David continued to call me about all the events concerning Sears and the employees up til he had back surgery. He would always let me know about the retiree luncheons. Sears and Rocky Mount lost a great man,but his memories will live til we meet him at the pearly gates one day. I am sure some of the Sears employees like Becky Proctor and Roger Hull met him and welcomed him to heaven for his just reward. You all will continue to be in my prayers. Sincere sympathy, Martha Griffin Taylor Barnes
