Charles Moye “Charlie” Goodrich died unexpectedly Monday, April 18, 2011. Charlie as he was known to family and friends was born October 5, 1942 in Sumter, SC to the late Wiley Clark and Gladys Hamm Goodrich. Charlie graduated from Oak City High School and earned a degree in Drafting and Planning from Wilson Technical Institute. He was employed and retired from the City of Rocky Mount.
Charlie was a past President of the Rocky Mount Ruritan Club where he enjoyed serving others. He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church where he served as a past Deacon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Wiley Clark “Bud” Goodrich, Jr, sister Ruby Goodrich, nephew Clark Roberson Goodrich and wife Penn Frazer Goodrich.
As an infant of nine months, Charlie was stricken with Polio, at which time he was admitted to Duke Hospital until the age of two, spending time in the Iron Lung to help him breathe. During the summer between 4th & 5th grades he was treated in Gastonia, NC, enduring a full body cast. Due to Polio, he was dependant on crutches and the braces he strapped to his legs each morning, of his 68 years. Never complaining, just doing what had to be done. In our family this made Charlie our “Knight in Shining Armor ". Charlie never wanted to be treated any different from his brothers, sisters or friends. He lived his childhood and teenage years in Hassell, NC, attending school, playing, working and attending 4-H Camp, where he won several blue ribbons for swimming. As one of his friends stated “Charlie had every reason to be a part of the system, but instead he chose to contribute to the system”. One of Charlies passions from childhood, the love of fishing followed him throughout his life. Two of his favorites fishing buddies were his beloved mother Gladys and her best friend Lucille Burroughs. With their passing, Grandson, Dustin assumed the role of fishing buddy. Along with step son Ray, Charlie and Dustin restored a 1965 Chevrolet C-10 truck. They attended many car shows and received numerous trophies for their prized possession. When granddaughter Mackenzie was born, the baby dolls and frilly girly things fit right into his life. Always there to rock a doll or play whatever Kenzie, asked of him. She was his little “Butterfly”. He will forever be their "Papa".
Although he was retired, Charlie was “jack of all trades”. He enjoyed helping others especially when it involved cooking a pig. Charlie was always smiling as he drove his pickup into the cook- out location. He had a unique pig cooker along with a black cast iron pot and a boat paddle both of which belonged to his late father. Charlie was always glad to give everyone a turn “to stir” the pot. If the paddle stood upright in the middle of the stew, it was ready to be served.
Charlie is survived by step-son Ray Joyner and wife Tammy, and their children Dustin and Mackenzie of Rocky Mount, NC. Stepson Clifford Lewin, wife Lisa and their children Joshua, Sarah, Dawn and Mary Abigail, stepdaughter Betsy Reeves and her children Charles Ray, Ronald and Amanda. Sisters Jean G.
