ROCKY MOUNT - Charles Buren Smith, age 89, passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2017. Born in Nash County, NC on March 6, 1928, he was the son of the late James Exum Smith and Maggie Elizabeth Williams Smith. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mildred F. Smith; brothers, James Exum Smith, Jr., and Tom Smith.
Charles retired after 35 years as general manager with M&S Oil Company. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Rocky Mount. Charles was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Charles leaves behind to cherish his memory, sons, Keven Smith of Greenville, Brent Smith and wife, Cathy, of Rocky Mount, and Kent Smith of Durham. He is also survived by grandchildren, Zackary Smith, Emalee Smith, Samantha Jackson, Carter Smith, Cody Smith, and Bailey Smith; sister, Myra Murray of Sharpsburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be on Saturday, September 9, 2017 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the home of Brent and Cathy Smith, 2820 Winstead Road, Rocky Mount. A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Rev. Larry Curtis officiating. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.

I was saddened to hear of the death of my sweet friend Charles. I was privileged to have Charles in Bible study when I taught at Brookdale. Charles loved the Lord and often spoke of Heaven as his final destination. He always spoke lovingly of his wife and family. He was loved by everyone at Brookdale and was often seen reaching out to help others there. I will miss you my sweet unforgettable friend and take comfort in knowing where you are. To the family, I offer my condolences on you great loss. I pray your memories will bring you comfort.
