Catherine Hannon Speight

ROCKY MOUNT - Catherine Hannon Speight, age 82, passed away on Sunday, September 12, 2021. Born in Vance County, NC on November 4, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Lacy Bragg Hannon and Mary Catherine Oakley Hannon. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James A. Speight, Sr. After graduating Henderson High School, Catherine attended Campbell College and then East Carolina University where she graduated with her Bachelor's Degree. Later in life, she worked alongside her husband Jimmy, who was a pharmacist at Almand's Drug Store, managing the Gift's and Accessories side of the business. Additionally both she and her husband enjoyed playing clarinet in the community band together. A loving mother, grandmother, sister, and dear friend to many, Catherine will be deeply missed and never forgotten. Catherine is survived by her sons, James “Jim” Speight, Jr. and his wife, Jeanie, of Durham, and Kevin Speight of Goldsboro; her daughters, Mary B. Wright and her husband, John, of Raeford, and Alison Knox and her husband, John, of Cocoa Beach, FL; her grandchildren, Ian, Patrick, Joe, Rebecca, Noah, Sam, Lacy, and Michael; her sister Mary Lacy Finch of Asheboro; and her brother Samuel B. Hannon of Clayton A Memorial Service to celebrate Catherine's life will be held on Thursday, September 16, 2021 at 11:30 AM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1130 N. Winstead Ave., Rocky Mount, NC 27804, with her grandson, Rev. Patrick Speight, officiating. The family will receive friends just prior to the services from 10:00 AM until 11:15 AM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.
